Hey. i know they are used for burning music, but what exactly do they do?

they tell the cd burning program what to burn

and if you have a live set, they tell it when to change the track, isntead of cutting up the mp3 into 12 diffent files.

they also are used for games, programs & vcd/svcd's

Try open a *.cue-file in Notepad, then it's easier to understand how it works

so do i just import it into nero or somethin? and if its a live set i can flick through each track instead of fastforwarding all the time?

Correct, but Nero fucks up with cues. If you wanna use a cue sheet for a music CD, I'd use EAC (Exact Audio Copy) as it handles cue sheets better.
