Trance music vs. Rock music: Does Trance lack raw soul?

Let's see what you guyz think of this:

I was just having a discussion with my friend who is a MAD guitarist and fanatically a classic rock fan. I was telling him my theory that Trance music is the popular evolution from instrumentals to electronically generated sounds. His argument was that no matter how maticulously a Trance song is produced, it will never have the same raw emotional level as Trance music.

Throughout the last 6 years that Trance has been a huge passion of mine, I have never lost an argument as to validity of the greatness of Trance. Now I am hit with the fact that Trance is meticulously produced, and no matter how much emotion an artist puts into its creation, it will be far too perfect to reach the same levels of soul that have made Jazz and Rock strike such a deep tone in everyone who listens to them.

Now my new theory: I believe that although raw soul occurs when rock music is played, Trance can produce that same raw emotion within its listeners. What I would like to see is a less perfect form of Trance music. This is what I have been composing for months now, improvised Trance music.

I would like to know what all of you think about Trance music lacking raw soul, and can such technically perfect music generate such powerful soul as a Zepplin solo?

Trance makes u addicted like ciggies etc..
But rock as in dire streights is aight when your in the mood.
My point being trance will allways rule.
There is a mood for everything take this for instance if your on E i dotn think your gonna want to listen to ROCK..
As i said there is a time and place and mood for everything.

If you cant feel the emotion from trance, then u shouldnt be on this site

Currently im absolutely hypnotised by beetseekers - walk of notes, it just makes me close my eyes and drift whereever my mind takes me, usually imaging a 10,000 crowd going mental.

corderoy - sweetest dreams (greg murray vox) made me cry as have other tracks

out of the blue almost shook my spine 7 inches to the left when i first heard those synths

Electronic music may be meticulously produced, but the same can be said for other genres of music - including rock. Maybe rock music's brash sound may lead people to believe that melodies are deficient and therefore sounding more improvised. Whereas melodies in Trance music sound finely tuned, where every note is perfectly placed.

In my opinion, "Laurent Garnier - The Man With The Red Face" contains this "raw soul" element, due to the sweet sax part. Human elements will always show more "soul", unfotunately there are not many Trance songs which rely on improvised or flawed elements - that's just the nature of Trance music. "Raw soul" is not invoked by a song (in the same way emotions are), it's something that is already there...

Shame / Disagreement

HAHAHAHAHA! Rock hasn't had a soul since atleast the mid to late 90's. Its been nothing but artists trying to be cool and use the minimum amount of chords doing so (ex. Blink 182, The Vines, Sum 41, White Stripes, and the list goes on). If your friend was referring to way back yonder and not to the current state of affairs, maybe he is right. However, trance to me is emotion and soul, except for cheese. Artists in the electronic music genres are always trying to capture a mood for their audience. For me, this shows way more soul than some ego driven star spreading his fingers up and down a fret board to a set scale.

I was going to say that it's pointless to compare trance and rock in any way since they have hardly anything in common, but I decided not to since most of the close-minded people here can't appreciate anything else than trance.

As someone already stated, there is a music genre for every mood. Nevertheless, I was a huge fan of rock before I started listening to trance(and even though I still love rock), my taste in trance altered my rock tastes a little.
I used to be hooked on Metallica, but nowadays I simply love more melodic stuff like Pink Floyd and Coldplay(dont mean to compare the two).
So if thats what trance does to me, and if my music tastes are maturing, then this is a whole different aspect of trance that few have encountered.

another way to look at this...

as a dj, the first time u step up to those decks above the crowd, facing the crowd...and mix in ur first tune. to hear the melodies blasting from the speakers, and knowing that it is coming from your record...and to watch ppl go nuts to it...if wut u feel ain't emotion, i don't know what is. sure, u ain't banging out chords on ur distortion guitar or whatever, but do a bass cut or something w/ the eqs, slam the faders or something...and to feel the speakers respond with a bass-shattering "OOMPH" will give u the same adrenaline rush.
