Question What's the big deal about SUVs in the US?

I noticed one thing here (the US) over the last few years: Why do so many people love Sport Utility Vehicles? Many have no cargo room in them, are heavy and waste petrol. They're costly to own. What's so special about them that makes them stand out from the crowd? What do the majority of people drive in Europe/anywhere else outside of the US? Why don't many hybrid vehicles come out over here? Does Mercedes-Benz or any other European car manufacturers make hybrids yet? If not, why? Please clear me up on this one, fellow TA-ers... Thanks.........

people who get suv's i think get them cuz they want more space and the hauling copasity without buying a conversion van or a minivan...which have no style and are considered family vehicals. i think it has to do with the people wanting to have something that isnt sterotyped as a family vehical. thats why i want one lol. i would rather drive a suv dispite the downfalls than a van.

cuz they flip over easily, guzzle gas, and most people use them as grocery-getters

SUVs are a status symbol in the US. Nothing more.

maybe people like SUV's because they are higher. I never thought about owning one

ali92 mercedes have a hybrid car but its not very efficient *surprise surprise*

honda and toyota and ford also develop alternative fuel cars, are usually more expensive and lack sufficient power. Its a good economic choice for people who can shell out an extra 10 000.

ex base: Honda Civic 16 000, Honda Hybrid 29 000, difference 13 G's

I'm pretty sure it has to do with people wanting to sit higher in their vehicles. I saw on TV that typically women feel more secure in a higher vehicle than they do in one that's slammed to the ground. I'd rather be closer to the road though.

I can't stand SUVs

There's always this SUV attitude that people automatically adopt when they get into the driver seat. They don't have to obey the rules of the road because they're driving an SUV.

I feel most of the people driving them are either teenagers who think they're cool because they're driving a big vehicle that isn't a mini-van, or they're people suffering from mid-life crisis' but cant afford an expensive sports car

I honestly can't see the advantage of them. I mean if you need the hauling power, then they come in handy but 99% of people who drive them are riding in them by themselves going downtown to work everyday.

Especially with the gas prices absolutely soaring lately, I can't see why people would want to own one.

SUVs are more stylish minivans. They are for the families who don't want to break down and buy a minivan cause it shows that their youth is gone, heh. SUV provide more room than normal cars to bring the kids to soccer practice, and carry more groceries home. This is all what I have observed. I don't know any single guys with SUVs, only families.

Oh yea ... I'm not talking about SUV's like Cadillac Escolades and stuff, I agree that those are status symbols.
