Untalented Movie Directors today...

The Van Helsing thread inspired me to write this. This is my opinion so agree or disagree with me all you want.
I think some directors have lost talent in movie making these days. Movies were just better back in the day because of story telling and imagination and using very interesting ways to film a scene. Today, all of the directors use stupid special effects, mostly CGI, which sometimes ruin the movie and story telling. They are using special effects as a crutch and not a bonus, which should be the other way around. They are losing interesting ways to film a scence that's imaginative and instead choosing often times lame and cheesy special effects. I just think directors today are losing talent.

Now this I will get killed for, but I still hold on to it:

Quentin Tarantino is the most untalented director who has an actual movie.

i disagree

Take a look at the films of Peter Weir (except for The Truman Show, that doesn't count )

Sure Master & Commander was sort of an epic and may have had some special effects but check out Fearless. Absolutely brilliant film, the technique and delivery is just outstanding.

However, yeah you are right that most films now ideas are quick cuts and flashy special effects to make up for loose ends and plot-holes. It seems that Hollywood has relied on CGI and special effects to boost thier revenue at the box office. The sad thing is..the formula works. All the big blockbusters, even though they get horrible reviews, still make a killing at the box office!

Its the real gems you have to look for and to know what directors are good at what they do. Directors like Tim Burton, Ang Lee (despite The Hulk, The Ice Storm makes up for it), Steven Soderbergh, Peter Weir and to a lesser extent because he hasn't fully proved himself just yet is M. Night Shamalayan (though i believe he is 1 director to look out for in the next couple years)

my $.02

Reason? or just a random statement of your distaste for an interestingly different director?

Also, whatever ever happened to the guy who directed The Usual Suspects, didnt he go on to direct X-men? WTF!? Bryan Singer is his name i think...

i am generalizing but hollywood produced films, and the majority of main stream ones, are shite, not to say that they dont have nice elements, effects etc good acting but you need to pick out the better bits that appear to me to be coming few and far between (i would go into detail but those who know what i mean know what i mean). European cinema is the way to find thought provoking and inspiring entertainment, that and ch4 and bbc2

i suggest a bit of spanish film making if you're board y' tu mama tambien' or 'lucia' or 'amores perros' (sp's please!!)

failing that read a book or discover your own imagination and make your own films

tarentino has become a little erm... arrogant lets say, not to say he hasn't had a hand in some grt films in the past, my favourite film is True Romance after all

i am a fan of social reform, but i really hate spike lee's attempts to "open the eyes" of americans. it's absolutely offensive and all he does is put racism back in the spotlight so that fox news of msnbc talk about "spike lees new controversial film", just to get attention.

I don't agree there are more bad movies today than in the past. Part of the reason the good ole days seem so good is because we only remember the best movies. It's true a lot of bad movies today hide behind special effects and other technical advancements that give the appearance of a good movie on the surface. I too get tired of the current CGI fad. Good stories, imaginative cinematography, top-notch writing, and interesting characters never go out of style. The movie industry always has been a business and will continue to be. You just have to take the good with the bad and remember style isn't a substitute for content.

Heh. Trance sucks now, these forums suck now, movies suck now. I'm wondering what else people are going to start complaining about.

There are still good directors out there such as Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later), Tim Burton (A Nightmare Before Christmas, Big Fish, etc.), and Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Majestic).
