Col Hamilton & John Cecchini @ Kellys,Portrush, Northern Ireland (22-03-03)
Review by gatecrasher13
We arrived at Kelly’s a little later than usual 9:45, it was not overly busy so we waited in the Synk (the second room in Kelly’s dedicated to chart music) for our friends to arrive. Unfortunately on my way from the entrance to the Synk I managed to lose £20, guess it evens up the time I found £20 sitting on the bar about 6 months ago!
We left the Synk at about 10:30 and went into the main room where Lush resident Col Hamilton was playing. As always Col played a very good set, there is one tune in particular that he played that I must ID, I have heard it in Col’s sets many times and still do not know what it is called. It is a beautiful track that is uplifting yet deep and progressive with brilliant baselines, maybe next time I have my camera with me I could take a vid of it being played:-)
Col finished his set at around 12 and handed over control to John Cecchini. John is an old favourite at Kelly’s and has played a staring role in many big nights at the legendary venue. One of his highlights must have been (well not a highlight for those at the front of the crowd) when he did a stage dive from the DJ box into the crowd when he was playing Freefall–Skydive, crazy….
Anyway this was the second time that I have seen John play, the first being when Dave Seaman missed his flight due to an air traffic control strike and John stepped in. I must say that at the start of John’s set I was more impressed with the last time he had played, his mixing was far better on that occasion. John was possibly a bit nervous at the start of his set but he soon got into his stride, although the mixing had not been great he was churning out some nice tunes that were taking the crowd onto a new level after the warm-up from Col Hamilton.
John continued to play some very good tunes that were bordering on the harder side of trance so I was enjoying myself immensely. It was quite a nice change to hear some banging trance at Kelly’s breaking the norm of mainly progressive. John finished his set strongly and the penultimate tune was the excellent, it was a truly uplifting finish and everyone left the place on an amazing high, great night.
