Greatest footballer ever?

Like most people I think it was Pelé but I know a lot of people think it was Maradona. Others ponder how good the likes of George Best could have been if they had laid off the beer/hadn't been injured/whatever. And what if other greats like Cruyff, Moore or Eusebio had a side as good as Pelé's 1970 Brazil side around them?

Who do you think was the greatest player of all time, and why?

And if you could choose a team of any 11 greats from the history of the game, who would they be?

maradona is the greatest player. thats why he received Fifa player of the century award.. and not Pele. pele is overrated. he was the best in the 50's but that doesnt say much. its like saying hendrix was the greatest guitar player ever.. thats wrong since eddie van halen is hendrix just started it up in the early days.. just like Pele did. you take Pele and put him up right now he will get raped. Maradona will survive and will dominate because hes the greatest

Pele won the world cup when he was 17! Yes thats right 17 years of age! And theres Maradona of course. Both south americans were genuises.

Kenny Dalglish great player for celtic and Liverpool. Liverpool got him to replace the great Kevin Keegan. The question at the time was can he fill king kev's boots, he ended doing more than that.

Greatest player in the 50s?? Perhaps you should actually read a biography of Pelé before you comment any further (there are many on the internet) - he was born in 1940 meaning he was a kid through most of the 50s. He was dicovered by one of Brazil's premier players, who declared "this boy will be the greatest soccer player in the world" - he was 11 years old! He went on to smash world records not broken to this day, scoring 1,280 goals in 1,360 games! The peak of his career was the late 60s, when the government of Brazil declared Pelé an official national treasure to prevent European clubs buying him for massive fees.

Fuck off and die.

Have you seen maradona lately. he's an overweight cocaine addict. pele is still doing great things for world football.

If maradona was the greatest player he would never have used drugs and disgrace himself in the way he did. Sure he was unbelievably talanted but he blew that with all the scandal and the fact that he cheated england out of a world cup. (thats coming from a scot). Pele was great from start to finish..........

Besides any of these players up agianst franco baresi was the greatest ever player.

I think Zidane is really underrated. A few years ago most people agreed he was the best in the world, espescially during World Cup 98 because he was on the winning side and there was a lot of hype about him. He hasn't got any worse, yet people seem to ignore him more. IMO he's a legend and one of the best, if not the best player in the world now.

Gazza (Paul Gascgoine) could have been remembered a great, but I doubt he will because of his alcohol problems (that didn't stop George Best from reaching that status I know). If he'd kept away from alcohol I think Gazza could have been remembered alongside the greats in English football, but instead I think he will only be semi-famous in a few decades time, which is a great shame for such a talented player. His career has gone so far downhill it's not even funny - he's gone from world class football to failing to impress an unheard of second division chinese team! He'll always be remembered in Newcastle though, espescially for that goal against Scotland.
