What makes cheese?

In your opinions..what makes a track cheesy?
for me...
Gay vocals
Overthetop sweetness
No/little Bassline
Shit Beats

For me it's two things, the vocals and the same old shitty dance beat that can be thrown over anything these days. Current example the version of moonlight shadow doing the rounds.

The vocals make a track cheesy. If they are too high in pitch like someone is screaming into a microphone etc. Soft, smooth vocals are awsome when done correctly. Heaps of very nice vocal tracks coming out soon- eg. Orange 3- In your eyes, As the rush comes, Beautiful things etc.

Vocals can make or break an otherwise good trance track., A good example is the 4 strings tracks diving and take me away. They were top trance tracks, but now with the vocals thrown in, there all of a sudden cheesy as hell.

nah, pitch on vocals has nothing to do with it.

flip and fill have actaully openly said they make shit, and they dont care, cos its gets $$s.

cheese is normally stuff made to sell, instead of being a showcase of the producers talents.

also ive noticed that, in general, girls like to sing along to songs, and dont care how it sounds, as long as they can sing along, guys, in general, prefer the big bass etc.

so, throwing down a doof doof doof doof beat under some 80s song generally suffices as a "new trance chart topper" and is lapped up, because the girls can sing along, and the guys can show off thier stereos.

a lot of good producers make cheese just to get in the $$s as well, classic example = ferry corsten.

hmm, there is a fine line though between cheese and quailty though sometimes, and its really up to you whether you think its a good track, or you've just been sucked in by a catchy vocal or deep bass line.

well thats my thoughts anyway.

in my honest opinion, i think cheese is determined more by the listener than the actual music.

like dave said, one person's perspective of cheese does not necessarily constitute the same for another.

once again if i can be frank, i hate the word cheese and all it's connotations. it creates an unnecessary segregation amongst music lovers and often (not always) it leads to these 'genre or sub-genre wars" that are so prevalent in music discussion forums (ie. itm).

i also hate it when a particular artist/dj is pigeon-holed as one of these cheese-dicks and their whole musical persona is based on this imaginary word.

if i like it - i like it, if i don't - i don't, no labels necessary...

but that's just me.

Cheesy track is a track that's made to please as many people as possible, made to follow the trends of the day.

GGGRRRR and i class cheese as female vocals always singing about love or some pathetic bullshit.... there are always exceptions to this tho...
but most ppl know im not a fan of vocals

*cough* We come one *cough* <<--- GGGRRR

However, i dont like when a song gets some air-play on the radio, thats when it get's called cheese.
