you should try to work it out by yourself (i mean see what is good for you after some work on the mixer)

the only videos which show exactly what to do with the eq are those:
learn to be a dj dvd/tapes, which are manufactured by a variety of companies.

cheers

the way i learned (still learning) is to listen to lots of live sets and notice the transitions, also watch videos.. also you have to record yourself mixing and listen very carefully to what sounded wrong.
one great way i learned is i listened to a PvD transition and then i tried to mix the same 2 songs (i happened to have the vinyls) then i compared them

yea do what haunted said but get really fuckin stoned by yourself...i mean really blazed get some phat nugz and smoke em. then sit back and listen to a mix you have never heard of from tiesto or digweed or some1 else who can mix like no other. you learn so much! honestly thats how i actually got good and thats how i learned to mix. do this enough and you'll either be a stoner, a decent dj or both like me* either way you'll come out ahead right?

Fuck yeah! Not to sound like I love drugs or whatever, but getting blazed and spinning is probably my fav thing to do right now during the summer when I have nothing better to do. I wish I could spin as good when I'm sober...I've beein pulling off some ill mixes while I'm ripped. Not to mention the satisfactory feeling all of us get when we pull off a perfect transition, smoking makes them seem tighter to listen to, just like it does everything else

Ok...so back to the EQing. I had the same problem as you when I first started spinning...I didn't know what the gain control was for, nor did I think that each record's EQ settings would be slightly different. The best thing to do is to record and just play on the spot..don't think about tracklists or anything yet, because tracklists are useless if you can't spin them right. Spin a quick set, and listen to yourself during those transitions, and see where things could be adjusted...are the sounds clipping? Are you draining one track out too much when they should be equal in terms of output? Are your mids to low to be noticed? Are your highs making your high hats exaggurated? Not enough? There's alot of things to look at than people think...what kinda bassline is coming in(i.e bubbly, driving, bouncy, chugging) is there a melody that can be mixed while I'm going out of the song, etc... look at every aspect of the song, and customize them to your needs and wants. That's what EQing is about. Keep fooling around until your mixing sounds right to YOU...then fine tune them so that it sounds good to everybody else.

Good luck...if you can, post a sample of a quickie set and I'm sure many of us would be more than happy to help you out in any way possible.

Or you could just end up more frustrated... Rarely can I mix well when stoned, for some reason I always get lost in transitions, lose my place in timing and am rarely right on point. Maybe it's the kind of weed I get but stoned sessions always turn into disastrous trainwrecks. However, as long as you know you're able to mix fine sober the track combos you come up with can be useful.

Anyways, eq's are a fun tool to have. I never used to use them but now I can't do a transition without 'em. I can't go really into detail but easing in song sections with the eqs instead of crashing them in is the way to go at it.

thanks alot for that. very intresting i notised u switched the bass very quickly, maybe thats what im doin wrong, i try to do it really gradualy and thats when it sounds fucked, like u got to b so damn perfect to get it rite cus if u do it slightly wrong u hear the bass gettin louder or quiter. maybe im tryin to do things to fast. also i notised ur transaction was quite short, are they normaly that short or was it cus u wer makin the vid? mine normaly go on for quite a while. thanks for makin the vid btw. hope u can answer my questions thanks in advance.

I can't mix for shit when I'm stoned. A little buzz maybe, but all out whacked and I can't mix at all. There should be a whole thread for this, I'd be interested to see how many people spin better that way.

I used to use the crossfader an awful lot when I started and my mixes actually turned out almost as good as they do now that I only use the EQ's. I don't use the crossfader at all, and hardly ever use the channel faders, I just bring the cued track in real low and then work the EQ's. One thing that might help, when I want to do faster transitions, if I'm playing harder stuff, then I'll make drastic changes during the phase kick. I gradually work the EQ's during the loop, then I'll really cut back on the outgoing EQ and bring in the incoming EQ (Sometimes it'll be High/High, sometimes High/Mid, etc.).

What you don't want to do, is make quick EQ shifts during the loop, because it will really sound out of place. Work with the two tunes, feel them out, and bring in sections of one song as the sections of another start to fade out. It's easy to get the basics down, the hardest part is really knowing your tunes and when certain parts cut out/come in, so you can make the appropriate adjustments on the incoming track.

Hope that helps, and more importantly made sense.
