Talking Best mixing on an album

I dug up some old thread yesterday, claiming that TranceMatch (Ferry vs Armin) was the best mixed CD ever. I heard a couple of my own through, and came up with Cosmic Gate's double CD "In The Mix Back2Back". If you don't own this, you need to get yourself some money and go out and buy it. The mixing in the CD's are awesome, and even though I have highly trained earns (as in being a musican myself+been listening to trancemusic for 4 years), it is sometimes hard to tell when the tracks are being dragged in. And of cause, the tracks selection is magnificent.

Moving on to the "Nyana" album from Tiesto; it was superb mixed, but the trackquality dissapointed me a bit. I know all about the "build-up-a-CD" thing, but it just ain't me. You build-up your sets live, but in studio, you have to get more banging tunes all the way through. Seriously, the start of CD1 (about the first 15 minutes) bored the crap out of me.

Also, I would like to mention "GlobalTrance Missions 02" from Ferry Corsten, because to be honest, that album blew me away. The tracks, the mixing, oh my... I can't remeber hearing a better mix ever, except for maybe "Retrospective Mix 2002", once again by Ferry Corsten.

Speaking of classics, Armin Van Buuren's series of AVBxxx (001: A State Of Trance, 002: Basic Instinct, 003: In Motion & 004: Transparance) sure had all the top tunes collected; Althought, I was not satisfied with his mixing there. I'm not quite sure why, I just more dig Corsten's type of mixing... Really hard to explain.

Well that was my 5 cents, now it's your turn:

Which albums would you nominate for best mixing ever?

ya, sasha definently got the skills when it comes to mixing. I thought TrancePort by Oakie was brilliant, however i've heard rumours that he used three tables (ala Carl Cox)

The situation gets a bit sticky if we're considering what was actually the most skillfully mixed versus what simply presented the best mix of tracks -- I make this distinction because lots of compilations are not truly mixed live (eg, GU013 was done with Pro Tools). It's hard to say whether this really matters from a listening point of view, but it's something worth thinking about anyway.

Having said that I always had a soft spot for the early Magik compilations, mixing wise. Technically they're sound and the track selection is such that there's almost always a constant flow from one track to the next. There's something to be said as well for somewhat more abrupt changes in flow (eg, Nyana) but I won't get into that...

PvD - Politics of Dancing
Sasha - GU 13 Ibiza
John Digweed - GU 19 Los Angeles
John Digweed - Bedrock (This one wasn't so seamless, but equally impressive due to the smooth flow of a more eccentric track selection)

u hav got to be kidding me. the mixing in nyana is almost as awful as ISOS3. everything before ISOS3 was good or average, but these 2 albums are a fucking disgrace.
