I was critisized by a Miami radio station because I played TOO MANY NEW TRACKS on my live mix.

What ever happened to "YOU HEAR IT FIRST" and being on the "CUTTING EDGE" or dance music? I was told to play more "known" tracks (IE, tracks they regularly play for the audience).

Because I have a peak time spot (5:00pm) and there are about 1500 people listening.

What should I do? Incorporate some more "Known" tracks and play at the prime spot? Or play what I want to play, and play a shit spot?!

i'd say keep your slot and introduce people to the newer stuff. Soon they'll be requesting it. You can only hear game master so many times.

tell them to go fuck themselves. that's the kind of attitude that causes music to become stagnant, formulaic, and just plain boring.

Just try and convince them that what you're playing will be the more regularly played tunes in two or three months. Then make a big deal about it on air so the listeners know that they're listening to quality tunage. I bet the number of listeners goes up because they all think they know the "new tunes", hehe.

I would play SOME older, recognizable stuff. People want to listen to the music more if they are able to recognize a few tracks... it makes them feel more like they're part of the scene, and psychologically, it makes them more accepting of the new music if it's mixed in with the old stuff. Now... I'm not sure how big the scene is in Miami, but if it's big enough that people will recognize the well known tracks, then it can't hurt to spin a few ones. Maybe you should go back and try songs that were popular last year, or a few years ago. You can still be unique in your sets without alienating your listeners by playing nothing recognizable.

I fully support that playing new tracks is better... only problem is for radio listeners, people need a solid mix of "OMG THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE OLDER SONGS!" and "WOW! THIS IS A REALLY GREAT NEW TRACK!"

So why is new music better than good music? Take the hint, and put some effort into your selection.

Trust me, most radio stations don't like having too much new stuff presented in one mix at a time. They like you to be able to throw in everything from old and new.

It's not like American/Canadian radio stations have ever done that much for trance music anyway. Do your best to keep the radio station happy with some older stuff and play GOOD new shit to keep trance alive.

unfortunately, that's the price you have to pay to play for the masses on something as commercial as radio. a major down fall, unless you're internationally known.

then do an hour mixing your favorite tracks including the older ones.
