why should the US get the release months before the guys in the uk. I think this tactic would mean Valve shooting themselves in the foot - think about it - it's gonna be on the net within hours of it's release so how many of us UK guys will wait for the official release? I think Valve are smarter than this!

We always get games before europe does, its a fact.

true true, evil mouths say that Americans are the paying playtesters for games, because european versions are always more tuned etc than the american versions of a game.

Not always but at least 95% of the time we do get games before Europe. One game that I can think of that I think released in Europe before North America was "The Getaway" for PS2.
Getting games first is nice, but it does have its disadvantages. Europe gets alot of added things to their games and Japan even goes as far as to re-release games with new features.
