Any suggestions for mix hosting services?

Hi All,

I know this thread has been done a couple of times recently, but I'm starting to seriously consider looking around for a new location to host my mixes at.

I am willing to pay for the service, and would probably be looking to host a couple of mixes online.

Has anyone found any alternatives recently to www.globalbeatz.net?

ok now see, my problem is i have no idea how many GB or whatever hosting say, 5 or 4 mixes that are about an hour each will take. i do not know how to figure out how many transfers of these mixes i'm allowed.

also i am not really willing to pay more than $5 a month, my budget is kinda tight.

could anyone just tell me real quick how to figure this out, since all these sites have some kind of limit? thanks!

A DJ mix of 60 to 70 minutes usually takes between 65 and 130 megabytes when compressed into a MP3 format file, depending on what bit rate (128kbps, 160kbps, 192kbps), and mode (CBR constant bit rate or VBR variable bit rate) is used.

So the MP3 file on average is 1 to 2 megabytes per minute of original music, or roughly 100 megabytes. That means if listeners do 10 downloads they would use 10x100 = 1000 megabyes or 1 gigabyte of bandwidth. If you had 10 gigabytes of bandwidth it would be enough for 100 downloads.

# Downloads.....Bandwidth
per month.......Used
10..............1 GB
100.............10 GB
1000............100 GB
10,000..........1000 GB

If you have a mix at Globalbeatz that gets the max downloads (I think it's 3 per day) then that is about 90 downloads per month or about 10 gigabytes of bandwidth they are giving you.

I've been recently trying a smaller mix MP3 format with Exact Audio Copy / Lame, using the "alt preset standard" format VBR setting, and for online mixes I then set EAC to "low quality" and a 70 minute mix takes 66 megabytes and sounds the same to me as the "high quality" setting that takes about 110 megabytes.

those prices look ok... but honestly... globalbeatz is still giving a really good deal, cuz the d/ls are unlimited and i paid like... 13 bucks for 3 months. also i'm allowed to host up to 10 or 20 mixes at once i think. its just really shitty w/ that username rule now.

Make that 701. Hmmm yeah that is hard stuff you have in that acid-battery mix, will do a full listen tonight.

It only took about 7 minutes to download. Globalbeatz is not bad, I would consider a paid account there. Don't know how they can afford all those gigabytes.

hm i wrote an email to the guy who runs globalbeatz, because i had yet another problem with one of my mixes...

"hi i am having a problem updating my info for my can't go to sleep mix...it says that the url is invalid. i havent' touched a thing.

also i think it's a shame about this new "users have to register " rule. i mean i understand for the free users, but for the ones who pay every month, like i do, it's really unfortunate. it's a known fact that the more steps someone has to take to do something on the web (ex. download a mix that the dj really really wants them to download) they are much less likely to do it. a person has to click on register, fill out all the info, check their mail and confirm, then sign in. those are a lot of steps for someone who had a passing interest in downloading the dj's mix. the average person would not want to do that. i think it was enough that we had to link to your site instead of just making the mp3 available. a lot of people are unhappy with this new policy...
well that's just my opinion, i hope this policy changes, because even though this site gave me some problems once in a while, it still provided me with what i needed, which is multiple mix hosting and unlimited downloads.

thanks
virginia"

if ya wanna write to him his email is [email protected]

hehe... the first day i found out about that rule i e-mailed the guy w/ an angry letter. he basically told me it was the only way they could limit traffic or something. apparently there were a lot of random people d/ling which was slowing down the server (i sorta thought the point of posting mixes was so random people could do that). but that was the reasoning he gave me and told me it wasn't likely to change anytime soon. oh yea, dkny, if u want to share a username and password that u can post with ur mixes, u can use,

username: tranceaddiction
password: ta

thats the username/password that dj sonix and i use. i noticed that after i posted that w/ my mix i've gotten more d/ls then before so it does sorta solve part of the problem.
