Trance at 125bpm???

I've just come up with a great (IMO) riff but it just doesn't sound good if played faster that 125bpm........would that still be trance?

I'm under the impression that it should really be in the 130 -140bpm range.

Can anyone give any examples of trance at a slower bpm?

Prog

Seriously though, Leama and Moor - Requiem For a Dream and Moogwai - Neon are both slow.

Also:
Invisible Inc - Stars
Delerium - Truly [Infusion Remix]
Kate Bush vs Infusion - Running up that hill
Jewel - Stand [Markus Schulz Coldhard Mix]
Shmual Flash - Chilling Moments

As you can see these are all pretty close to progressive. There are lots of good prog tracks in the 120-130 BPM range, just no epic trance stormers.

PS - I just got to add Jase from Outer Space - Do what you want [Infusion Remix] because it is such a great song and only at like 123 BPM.

Why not. If it sounds best at 125 BPM, keep it 125 BPM. And call it trance if you'd like to as well, and if you think it sounds trancey. BPM-barriers are only foolish. Trance seems to work and sound like trance in quite a broad spectrum of BPM. I guess the same can't be said about genres like happy hardcore...

125 is definitly to slow for trance.. and great bass lines work better for house or progressive anyway..

thing is, the majority of trance DJ's aren't going to like it if its only 125bpm and sounds bad any faster, so your shooting yourself in the foot really.

Chicane -Offshore is 125.8 BPM, and that fits fine in any set-
It all depends what mood etc the track is in as to whethyer it works at a certain speed.

Cut it at the speed it sounds best at- thats why turntables have pitch control.....

if it sounds good then it's good, leave it

usually i like to put bpm's on a playable range, but the first thing you should have in mind is to make a good track, not to make a playable track to sell a lot. it's because of crap like this that sometimes music doesn't evolve - break the rules!

one example of great slowed down (progressive) trance is subsphere - i think both his remixes of azior are around 125 and the originals infinite/sweet fragrance are 130

hmm If you're trying to go prog, then ~126-128 is tempo to go for (most holden / chable / infusion productions are in that range)

127 can easily be pitched up to 133 and voila there you have it: pumpin' prog

I've done epic trance at 128 bpm. As long as the melody uses chords and not fast individual notes, if works fine, if a bit...different. Really, use whatever bpm works.
