Days of reckoning for Grits

AFTER ELEVEN years and three straight majority governments, it's time to throw the Liberal bums out.

If Prime Minister Paul Martin and the Grits were proud of their accomplishments, they'd be talking about them instead of smearing Stephen Harper and the Conservatives at every opportunity, as they have for weeks now in the run-up to today's expected election call.

Then again, it's easy to see why the Liberals would rather not discuss their own record. Consider ...

# INTEGRITY: When the sponsorship scandal broke, Martin said Canadians had a right to know what had happened, before he'd call the vote. That's broken promise No. 1.

Despite Martin's promise to fix the "democratic deficit," he ordered Liberal MPs on the Commons committee investigating AdScam to shut it down. If the Grits win this election, count on them to wreck the judicial inquiry into AdScam as well, just as they did with the Somalia inquiry.

# HEALTH CARE: While the Liberals portray themselves as the guardians of national health care, it was Martin's cuts to health funding for the provinces when he was finance minister that led to many of the crises he now says he'll fix. Yet he blames Ontario's awful new health tax on Mike Harris? C'mon!

# JUSTICE: After sticking us with a useless long gun registry that was supposed to cost $2 million but is on track to cost well over $1 billion, the Liberals made a last-ditch attempt last week to give it a facelift -- including a promise to increase penalties for gun crime. Coming from the folks who've done nothing in a decade to fix our revolving-door justice system, and who replaced the soft-on-crime Young Offenders Act with the even worse Youth Criminal Justice Act, that promise is laughable.

# THE MILITARY: The ultimate symbol of Liberal neglect of our once-robust Armed Forces? They still haven't replaced our ancient Sea King helicopters, after cancelling the contract let by the previous Tory government over a decade ago. Shame.

# IMMIGRATION: The feds can't find thousands of failed refugee claimants, some with links to terrorism and organized crime (and their records on those are abysmal, too). Meanwhile, they continue to set immigration policy without consulting cities like Toronto, which bear the brunt of the costs.

# FOREIGN POLICY: The Liberals have damaged, perhaps irreparably, our relationship with the U.S., our closest ally and largest trading partner. Not agreeing to join the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq was one thing. But the way the Liberals did it -- complete with name-calling -- was childish, boorish and costly.

# TRANSPORTATION: Under the Grits, our national air and rail carriers have stumbled from one crisis to the next. And they've raked in billions in gas tax revenues while investing next to nothing in infrastructure. Enough said.

Small wonder the Liberals would prefer to talk about anything but their record. Well, too bad. Once Martin drops the writ, they'll have no choice. Starting today, voters will get their long-awaited chance to hold them to account.

um..yeah. we should support this ridiculous war b/c of trading relationship w/ the US- that's brilliant. Our soldiers lives are worth more than that!

what a poorly written one-sided 'article'- this is why the Sun will never be more than a cheap tabloid rag. they talk about a lack of integrity in the liberal party yet they have no journalistic integrity. i would call myself a fan of the liberal party but that what crappy article!

Which PM sold CN RAIL to a private consortium?

CN RAIL is/was profitable yet the gov't at the time decided that it needed to be privatized yet still held on to VIA rail for some god awful reason. Maybe becuase VIA is not AT ALL profitable.

NOW VIA rail has to PAY once publicly owned CNRAIl to use there rail lines across Canada.

Smart move? You answer the question, go find out which gov't did it as well.

it is an editorial so you would expect the one-sidedness. you wouldn't expect Sun readers to have the intelligence to form unbiased toughts.

Regarding the helicopters, it cost over 100 Million to cancel the contract, which was for between $250-$350 million, but hey they kept that promise right?

As for Immigration, the problem is enforcement and action of policy. The FEDS leave it to the local police to pickup these criminals by chance, if @ all, and then deport them.. which happens pretty irregularily. Also, those that want to come here legally through proper sponsership or VISAs face a large financial drain, long waits, and botched files. They tried to deport my ex's son because they screwed up his paper work. He must of been one threatening 4yr old...

this article is so well written...for a 10 year old. this editorial is a laugher.

you have to remember who their target audience is-- the challenge is to express opinions mono-syllabically as to not hurt their reader's brains.

They certainly don't endorse the war here, and are quite correct that the manner Art Eggleton as well as some other MPs grandstanded and slagged the US and Bush(although I agreed with the assessments) are certainly not the way to manage your country's affairs. This cost Canada badly come Mad Cow and SARS. Ever wonder why they shut our beef out within a day, and no political rapport over the issue, which cost our economy billions. When I was in Detroit for DEMF, CNN had Toronto and SARS scrolling around the bottom every 43 seconds..as well as Mad Cow right behind it.

I've been browsing all the party websites recently, and am keeping my options open.. some interesting info from the NDP's site..

Federal funding for health care is lower today than it was in 1994. Even with recent increases, the federal share of health care will have dropped from 50 per cent to 13 per cent. The result? No cash, no clout! Funding cuts have hurt the government's ability to enforce national standards.

National standards are weaker today than they were when the Liberals took office, and federal enforcement of the Canada Health Act is so weak, the Auditor General says they can no longer tell which provinces comply.

The cost of patented drugs rose 27 per cent last year, and today, drugs cost more than doctors, but there's no national pharmacare plan. And families need help to care for loved ones at home, but there's no national homecare plan.

As much as I don't like the Sun, I've often found very balanced arguements and facts regarding a lot of topics, especially regarding our military and depleting social infrastructure.

As basic in form as the editorial was, nearly every point rings true in regards to the Liberals record over their term. I think it unfair that when pointing out the well documented failures of our leaders on this forum, those who do are then expected to champion a replacement (although some ppl here have taken that role themselves)

And Tara, I am really suprised @ your bashing of a paper, and their readership. Just because the majority of it does cater to a "percived" lower working class. The meat of the paper is sports and entertainment, with right leaning columns. You could flip your analyis in regards to the Star... say as a extremist left-wing rag that cries racism when the Blue Jays have too many white players (on the front page @ that).

If the Sun offers wholehearted support of the conservative goverment (or atleast harper "It was probably not an appropriate term, but we support the war effort and believe we should be supporting our troops and our allies and be there with them doing everything necessary to win," Harper said."- harper) would equal support of the war. Rather than coming out and saying it they chose to use the words 'it's one thing to not support the war'- avoiding the issue.

The paper is written at a lower reading level. that is anundisputed fact. I find their editorials to be poorly written and more-onesided than just about any other newspaper (the G&M is also a more right-wing paper but I'm not bashing it).

I actually feel sorry for sun readers. i used to work in the office of a warehouse for a summer job. The ppl that worked in the warehouse were all sun readers. they had little education and often big families. they were all staunch harris supporters. they made little money but honestly belived that they would see some actual $ due to the tax cuts, meanwhile, the education system, and the health system were crumbling and they had no idea. Only a seect few realized that to raise their children to have better lives than what they had, it was important to have social programs that their children could rely on.

The Sun's or the Conservatives views aside, the Liberal's misconduct over the past few years in dealing with the US has hurt us badly.
