It might also be the output cables it might just have started outputting in mono.

it could have something to do with your cart, have you checked to make sure all of its connections are spot-on?

i had this problem a few months back...
it turned out that the wire connections between the tonearm and the cartridge were loose. so it could be that- try tightening them up.

Yeah, this has happened to me before and it is the cartridge. This is what you gotta do: unscrew it, and lick (belive or not) the back four gold dots. Just put into your mouth and lick it as if you were sucking on the tip of your thumb. This usually clears the static. Then, just screw it back on tightly and TA-DAH! Just a cool DJ trick I learned while playing at my first live gig.

Like Psiweaver said, don't discard the RCA outputs as a source of the problem. If it does turn out to be that, there was an earlier thread that had a link explaining exactly how to replace the RCAs.

I would suggest NOT licking it, but instaed using isopropyl alcohol
saliva leads residue, which can compound the problem
Alcohol does not, it evaporates quickly.
I would take a Q-tip, soak it in alcohol, then clean INSIDE the tonearm, pushing into the 4 contacts. As well, wash the contacts on the cart with teh alcohol. let it dry, then re assemble.
