Red face Rooney new Pele?

Ok, I am a fan of England but let's not lose our heads here. Rooney has played well regardless of his age - very well actually - but he has only scored against Swiss and Croatia.

They were singing the praises of Owen (if i am not mistaken he was "the new pele" in 1998 as well) when he burst onto the scene and I think its safe to say that he didn't exactly live up to those lofty expectations. He's a really good player mind you (and I for one think that Sven should keep him for starters) but the kind of hype that followed him made you believe he could score at will.

And people are also quick to say that Rooney's performances are all the more exemplified because he plays in an average team. Nonsense. England have a solid team in midfield with a constant supply of quality passes to the forward men and have a defence that have so far only conceded goals from set plays. They are anything but average. I haven't seen any of the heavyweights in this tournament razzle dazzle to be honest.

Bottom line - Rooney is a very good player on the verge of great things. And he is not Pele II (not yet anyways) because Pele I won the world cup.

^^^^ what he said

except winning the world cup should not be a criteria for greatness.. think eusebio, marco van basten, gullit, di stefano, baggio... all better than say owen, all absolute geniuses with the ball, but it doesnt make them less great for not winning the world cup

I don't think he is Pele yet, however, he is a pretty decent player. Also, the fact that was mentioned that he only scored against the Swiss and Croats is right on the spot. Both of those countries play decent soccer, but i believe that the English team is a bit better. So lets he how he handles some of the better teams. Also, I have never seen him play club ball, to be honest.. this Euro is the first time i've heard of him.

I actually have is first professional goal on MPG, a 35 yard Screamer against Arsenal at the end of 2002. I may host it on my webspace for a while lol

Rooney is definitely not the new Pele! Pele was the best player in his time, but i can mention lots of better players nowadays than Rooney is!! I think we can delete this tread!!

he does not need to win a world cup to be regarded as one of the best in the world.

the best players ever have got to be pele maradona and..... BEST. best never won a world cup but is regarded as one of the best.

but he has a lot to proove to become one of the best. there is no denying he is an exceptional talent.

Pele was the greatest player in history - to start comparing Rooney to him is, well, ridiculous.

Rooney is a good player as much as it pains me to admit, but he is not a patch on the likes of pele and maradona.

He doesn't have the finesse and sheer skill that these players did.

I love the way the english media over-hype absolutely everything good that happens to the team. If they are not careful they will put too much pressure on him and he will end up like gazza.

i bet by the time he's as old as Owen, he wouldn't be so good anymore, he's just a hype, the kicks the balls in which he gets from midfield, so they deserve credit aswell. don't forget he only played Croatia and Switzerland, not the best kinda defense, is there?
put him up against a good team, like France or Portugal, and he's nowhere. he will never be Pele 2, since he doesn't have finesse.
the finesse Zidane, Figo, Davids, Pele, Van Nistelrooij, Van Basten, Gulit, Maradonna, Cruijff, Eusebio, etc has.
he just walks fast and struggles a lot, that's why he can score a few times.
