i was just thinking today about how much we invest in our record bins. i love to have the records and don't think i could really ever sell them, but in terms of their future value...will they have any? i mean sure some people out there will always like records, but if cd's do eventually replace vinyl...won't the worth of the records themselves go down the shitter? i don't know, just the thought makes me question whether to think about a switch...

what do you guys think?

Heh, good point. I think vinyls will have "classic" or antique value.

CDs will probably go before vinyls if DJs keep spinning them. CDs will be replaced with other media I would have thought.

Good point!

I don't think vinyl will ever have it's day. I think of CD's as just a way to get newer stuff out faster, and not to be better!

see i agree with that. just like records from the 50's-60's now. but i just had the thought that...i spend a lot of money to get some rare records that i really enjoy. this investment could be a horrible one because the people that will continue to enjoy this genre after its gone, will probably be limited...people will flood the market trying to rid themselves of these old records laying around there house...and some of those rare records will become available at really cheap prices...

maybe that takes a lot of assumptions, but it could happen

yea actually vinils becomeing more mainstream nowadays, besides nothing has beat the audio quality, people have been saying vinil was gonna go poof since the 8track was invented and i doubt the cd was any different then any of the other mediums. Vinils always gonna be their cuz of people like me who cant get enough of it

well...this is my point.

vinyl has stayed the staple for clubs and dj's...but big names don't have time to get things pressed anymore for themselves...they want it FASTER and so they play cdrs.

so the vinyls are only really pressed for those of us that are buying them. so what about when cd releases become faster than vinyl releases...or mp3s for that matter? than those of us that are waiting for the vinyl are behind the music.

of course i really want vinyl to stay in, but if people realize that to be the most update with whats new they have to have cd's and mp3s then the pressing of vinyl will most likely become less and less desirable.

and if you think about it...vinyl DID die. maybe not to all of us that are into djing, but i think the majority of younger adults nowadays don't even know what records are....let along something like a tracks hehehe.

vinyl remained the staple of the dance clubs for a reason and i'm assuming that reason was

1. sound quality

and

2. that is the medium that the genre was being released on.

with those two things perhaps losing significance...i don't think that it's that far fetched..

ya know, our parents probably read the same article in 1983... kinda weird eh?

well...i don't know about your parents by my parents have a big record collection that just sat in the basement for 15 years before i started to get interested in getting tables and the like.

they even have pretty big name records like beatles stones etc...but if they wanted to sell them...they probably wouldn't get that much simply because the demand for records isn't great anymore. sure there are collectors out there that would want to buy them...but most people don't care anymore and i bet any collector that actually wants to get those types of records nowadays can get them pretty easy with everyone cleaning out there basements...

no, thats not what i'm saying. i'm stating that what your original post said was probably an article in a news paper asking our parents what they are going to do now that CD's were going public (1983).
