Who the hell deisgns cars these days

obviously does not talk to the person who's gonna be working on them. Took a nice jolly hour and a half to replace a freiken headlight on my Aurora. Had to take off hoses, air cleaner hose, air cleaner assembly, cross member bracket, numerous sensors, and then had like barely enough room for my fucking hand to get in there and get out the light bulb. I was ready to beat someone down...what a nightmare.

ok...just had to vent..feel a little better now, hopefully the becks 24oz will help too

so anyone else have nightmare experiences from doing your own auto maintenance?

You should have just bought a new car.

Oh yeah, I know what you mean.

It took 4 people and 2 hours to switch the bulb to my dad's car and even then one of the springs holding it in place snapped.

do you konw how much work goes into that design though. How many independent companies from across the world design all that.

It freakin sucks trying to communicate, especially when they contract someone out just for something, like the head lights.

I almost went into this type o work, but I didn't.

Designs look better on paper and I don't think they have mechanics in mind when they design. Even stuff that need replacing often can be absolute hell like oil filters and fuel filters, and some hoses can drive one freaken mad if they need replacement.

Its also inevitable. You are always gonna haev those things that just don't fit anywhere.

They have 3d models of what is aroudn it and they do try to make it ergonomical....but there are a lotta things to it...time, money, etc etc.

so suck it up pu55ahs hehe.

I went to school with the kind of people who design these things. You know what, most engineers are fucking idiots when it comes to shit like that. Your biggest problem though is you were working on a GM car, they are fucking horrible at packaging. Get a Toyota or Honda, seriously.

For my senior design I did the SAE Mini-Baja project, and the guy who did steering was a fucking dumbass. He was the type of person who thought he knew what he was doing too, downright dangerous combination. He fucked so much shit up on that car, and his steering design broke within the first minute of use. Our steering broke another 6 times on us during competition. He is now working for Visteon doing steering last I heard BTW, Visteon makes parts for Ford, remember that next time you consider buying one.

I think it's more of a design/engineering mentality vs a mechanic/laborer. The engineers are like how cool can we make this, well it involves stuffing all this shit here and there, ok, whatever, who cares about the laborer.

It just cracks me up tho cause I try to do a repair on this Aurora, then I do a repair on my 69 charger and just laugh. Headlight repair on the charger is 3 minutes top. Yeah whatever my aurora massages me while i'm driving and shit but god damn to replace anything is a **** whore.

Gone are the days of the Shadetree mechanic

Honda isn't much better. My sister used to have a '90 Accord. I had to take out the freakin battery to replace the headlight bulb. How stupid of a design is that?!
I have a Dodge Ram pickup truck, I love the truck to death but hate changing the air filter. The air filter is in a housing that you have to take off. The housing is held onto the throttle body with one of those hose clamps. You would think it's easy. Just unscrew the clamp and take it off. Yeah, that's the easy part, putting it back is the hard part. The clamp never wants to seal around the filter, so annoyng.
