right I'm probly gonna convert FM recordings to 128, or VBR 128-192 at least
want to do another test to see if there's likely to be a noticeable change in quality
does anyone know the type of music which will show up the most difference at these bitrates?
like....quiet...or violin type sounds....or lots of high frequencies...?
cheers. !

Jazz music definately. Try to use more modern Jazz though because old recordings obviously sound poor to begin with.

It's easy to hear distortions due to the bitrate in epic metal up to about 224k or so.

cool info.
all my "singles" are mostly at 192, it's just the FM radio recordings, where the loss in quality is the airwaves, etc.
i can really detect very little difference between 192 and 128...sends you nuts "trying" to detect a difference

I find that 128k sounds crap if it's played at a decent volume, it's OK for listening and hearing what a tune sounds like but not much more IMO, then again I never used to be able to tell.

I'd go for 192Kbps 44KHz CBR stereo (no joint stereo) full quality lame rip...

its all about which encoder you use.
i encode some things at 128k using cool edit pro 2, and you will find very little difference between that and 160k mp3's encoded in other things.
the main things that get fucked up with encoding is the mids and highs. again, using cool edit pro2, i can't notice any distortion on 128k.
