Has TA become a huge Self-Promotion site rather than a message board ?

I know some people will moan for what I'm saying, but If they don't like it they can just respect my freedom to speech, it's something I've noticed a lot of lately & wanted to know if i was the only one...

So Many threads like

x dj playing on yyy radio
markus schulz this
(insert dj name) sucks now
armin that
Ozgur Can this
Probspot that
new radio station that will just play the same old sets and sounds as all the others
prog house rocks now trance sucks
download my mix which is full of tunes I've made my own edits of
my aunties pet goat is playing in 10 days on (insert radio here) and I wanted to make sure you're tired of me talking about it before you get there.
listen to my tune and help me get signed
just use discogs
trance is dead
trance is back
trance is dead again
omfggggggggggggg im going to talk about a song that's not even out yet cos I got it on mp3

just to name some.

It seems to me that TA which used to be an amazing board for having a large number of very knowledgeable and appreciative music fans has just become a place to argue or publicise someone and their projects, and I think it's a shame, as now you ask about a tune and you get old to use discogs, which yes is a great resource, but in the past we'd have been able to talk about the particular track and have lots of opinions respected where now there's just so many trolls.

So am I the only one who sees this happening or Am I being paranoid ?

Gotta agree with you to an extent.

I'll admit to doing some self-promotion - I play on a radio show, on a slot that's not that busy, and there's not a lot of ways to get people listening, it's only natural for people who DJ or make tracks to want to promote themselves.

There's still good music discussion going on, but I agree with you about more people being told to use discogs, etc. Nothing wrong with discussing the remixes, and giving some opinions about them while you're at it...

Trance is dead threads seem to mostly be by attention-seeking newbies. If trance is dead, why are there like 600 of us on at a time, and it's one of the busiest music boards there is?

Yeah, on the scale I mean going back upto 3 years when I first joined TA where it seems that now especially people seem to enjoy signing up to just promote things, and it's a shame in a way cos back then there were many good threads but now it's mainly about things that not every1 can join in

I agree with you for the most part. I feel Discogs is more of a blessing than a curse though....although I don't know if that's exactly how you feel about it.

By telling someone about discogs, hopefully they'll remember it and go back there for simple questions that really don't require much thouught. However, if someone wants to talk about the background of a certain person, track, set, whatever, then the discogs comments disappear and generally you'll see a semi-intelligent conversation go on. Semi-intelligent because there are always those people that will enter with no intention other than to bring the topic off topic, or to create some sort of flame war.

I can't say I know of that environment, as I haven't even been here for a year yet. I was reluctant to start posting here at first because I knew of the attitude, of the lack of respect for one another's opinion, but I said screw it, if they want to argue over personal beliefs, I'll just sit back and watch.

I guess I'm more used to it than you are, as it's something that I've, in a sense, been "brought up in."

Yeah, I think discogs is a great resource but at the same time could take the fun of finding out things like who was behind a project etc, so it works both ways

The demise of the New Releases forum is just conformation of what you're saying here. In the past that forum was used to discuss releases and it would be a great resource for people who actually want to find out about music before they buy it. Nowadays it's just people squabbling over mp3s.

It's a sorry state of affairs, but it isn't the end of the world. I might need to start campaigning to get it sorted...

well i do agree with you however if you compare the size that TA was and now is, you are bound to get the double amount of idiots..also back in the day it wasnt an issue discussing an mp3..someone would talk about a track got sent to them by AG and people would follow in the conversation and someone would post a link...now its how dare you talk about a track that you dont own..if you talk about a track you have to post the release date, the record lable, how much it weighs haha...people dont talk freely anymore..as much as i hate to admit it but the RIAA won..we are scared to talk..
