Yeah, even before the fall of the Iron Curtain Turkey was an ally of most Western European powers in the Mid East - so therefore they likely could have been in before E Euro countries. (Not to disqualify their merits)
Turkey has a lot of issues to deal with, but considering their orientations and in comparison to other nations in the area their ethnic distribution could be actually a stabilizing factor esp with a LOT of Turkish peoples or relations in Germany, et al. Kurds, Turks, Muslims and non coexist there reasonably well, and the fact that Israel is trying to join the EU - and perhaps could join before Turkey is highly suspect. (Read: they arent in Europe) Yet Turkey and Israel are strong allies due to the lack of Israel's airspace|
