Question Can you DJ with cassettes?

Anyone know? Is there such thing as a cassette deck with pitch adjust, etc?

That's how Mixmaster Mike got started. I don't think there is any pitch adjust ( ), but you can "drop the bomb" on what you need to do.

Oh yeah, and

LMAO.....class thread mate.

I never knew there were tape decks out there with pitch control, dat is da truw getto styzle man.

Could be good though if you were using DAT tapes, they sound better than CDs, but I wouldn't enjoy queing a track up, or scratching for that matter.

That's how me and a friend got started doing remixes and looping stuff. Back in about 84 the question 'Mum, can I get some decks' was met with complete bewilderment.
And yes, I had a tape deck with pitch control, but it called it something different.
You will be surprised what you can do once you develop a good ear for bars and beats and skills at using a pause button.
What do you think you are doing when you are editing samples?

Another totally weird thing is that the first reverb/delay untis were aslo a strip of tape that just looped round.

So the idea of DJing and doing stuff with cassettes is not so ridiculous as it seems.

I also had one deck (Sony I thinks) and used to scratch with the beginning of Chaka Khan - I feel for you. The reason being the spoken word at the beginning. Can sound ok (by early 80s standards) without any fader work. However if you get wild with the pause button you suddenly get transformer scratching.

There were other techniques too, such as pressing the pause button slowly to create a slur type effect. Sounds naff now but this is what we had to work with. If you have the need and desire you learn to use what you have at your disposal.

If you can be creative with whatever you have accessible to you then you understand the true spirit of being a DJ. It's easy just getting it prepackaged and not thinking about it. But you will never take it to the next level, you will be content to do what the others do.
Just look at African Cultures. They make instruments out of all sorts of weird and whacky stuff. It's this spirit that gives us new music genres and breakthroughs.

Cool question and definately worth asking.

Cheers
Nem

I was also going to recommend Tascam tape decks

Marantz also does some portable tape players destined for the journalism world which have pitch on them.
