Be Cool! Active speakers? Powered speakers?

Just looking for some speakers for my bedroom. I don't know whether to get an amp. This is because you can get powered speakers, which means you don't have to have an amp. Which one do you suggest getting? Amp and unpowered speakers or just powered speakers?

I've seen on various websites speakers caleld active speakers and monitor speakers..what's the difference?

Thanks
Chris

I would get powered speakers. They are easy to setup and carry. If you plan to DJ @ house parties powered speakers are the best option.

I have a pair of Electro Voice SxA 100+ power speakers.

I suggest you look into Electro Voice if you like your mid's and hi's to be extra clean and crisp.

Before I had the EVs I had a pair of JBL's. The JBL's were good but the mids and hi's werent as good as the EV. Thus I sold the JBLs and got EVS

I would suggest you go into your local store with your favorite CD and listen to the sound produced from all the different speakers. This will help you decide which speaker works best for you.

This really doesn't matter thàt much if you're just a bedroom DJ. I prefer the passive speakers, because of no particular reason, probably since I've always had passive speakers. If you're planning on going mobile, I'd suggest you passive speakers. If you would take active ones, I can really suggest the JBL Eon's

Active speakers are always better than passive speakers because they have a dedicated amp for all the cross over frequencies.

Getting a JBL Eon would be over kill for his bedroom. Consider getting M-Audio BX5 or BX8. Or even the Event Truths. They are considered studio monitors but you can certainly use them for DJ, listening and producing.

There is no difference. When the word "monitor" is used, generally it's assumed it has enough of a flat frequency response needed for accurate listening/monitoring. A lot of home/commerical speakers are designed to add extra "color" to certain frequencies to make the music sound warmer.

Yeah sounds good. What about the little speakers, like the ones you get in a numark or gemini package?

I highly recommend staying around from any packages from Gemini and Numark. It may be cheap but you don't get your money's worth. What will happen is you'll be dissatisfied after a few months and seek better stuff. Save yourself the trouble and go for the better equipment.

Mackie HR824 or HR624 are great.

M-Audio Studiophile BX8 or Studiophile BX5 are good.

TAPCO S·8 by Mackie are a good option too.

Mackies are great, but expensive. You are looking at around a thousand per monitor.

I got some samson 65a monitors and 120a sub (amplified) for around 700$ used and they are great.
Good quality and enough power for one room.

damn good, im really pleased with them

the only problem i have is that having rearranged my room to maximise the space, the speakers have to be against a really flimsy plasterboard wall which makes the bass sound really weird
