Dunno Bush Doesn't Oppose Gay Civil Unions? WTF

I heard a soundbite on cnn in which bush said that he did not oppose gay civil unions, or something to that effect. Anyone catch that or have news link? Sounds strange. Is it true? Thanks.

Dunno Bush Supports Gay Civil Unions and Thinks His Party Platform is Wrong

I found some. That's wierd.

MSNBC

Bush's gay union stance irks conservativesThe Associated Press
Updated: 3:05 p.m. ET Oct. 26, 2004

WASHINGTON - Some conservative groups expressed dismay Tuesday over President Bush’s tolerance of state-sanctioned civil unions between gay people — laws that would grant same-sex partners most or all the rights available to married couples.

“I don’t think we should deny people rights to a civil union, a legal arrangement, if that’s what a state chooses to do so,” Bush said in an interview aired Tuesday on ABC. Bush acknowledged that his position put him at odds with the Republican platform, which opposes civil unions.

“I view the definition of marriage different from legal arrangements that enable people to have rights,” said Bush, who has pressed for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. “States ought to be able to have the right to pass laws that enable people to be able to have rights like others.”

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry backs civil unions for gay couples, too. He opposes gay marriage but also opposes the idea of a constitutional ban.

Some conservative organizations sharply disagreed with Bush and pressed him to seek a constitutional amendment that would ban both gay marriage and civil unions.

“Civil unions are a government endorsement of homosexuality,” said Robert Knight, director of the Culture and Family Institute, an affiliate of Concerned Women For America. “But I don’t think President Bush has thought about it in that way. He seems to be striving for neutrality while defending marriage itself.”

Knight said “counterfeits” of marriage, such as civil unions, “hurt the real thing.”

The head of another group, the Campaign for California Families, said it, too, wants a sweeping constitutional amendment that bars civil unions and same-sex marriage.

“Here’s the truth, civil unions are homosexual marriage by another name,” said Randy Thomasson, the group’s executive director. “Civil unions rob marriage of its uniqueness and award homosexuals all the rights of marriage available under state law.”

“Bush needs to understand what’s going on and resist counterfeit marriages with all his might no matter what they’re called,” Thomasson said.

But Matt Daniel, the leader of a coalition that successfully pressed for legislation that would create the constitutional ban on gay marriage, said Bush had staked out just the right position.

A federal ban on gay marriage, not on civil unions, “is the way for America to resolve this in the fairest way, the best way,” said Daniel, president of the Alliance for Marriage. “We do indeed support the president’s position.”

Bush breaks with GOP on same-sex unions

Washington, DC, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- President Bush broke with the Republican Party platform in supporting states' rights to permit same-sex civil unions.

"I don't think we should deny people rights to a civil union, a legal arrangement, if that's what a state chooses to do so. ...

"I view the definition of marriage different from legal arrangements that enable people to have rights. And I strongly believe that marriage ought to be defined as between a union between a man and a woman.

"Now, having said that, states ought to be able to have the right to pass laws that enable people to be able to have rights like others," Bush told ABC's Charlie Gibson in an interview broadcast Tuesday on "Good Morning America."

"So the Republican platform on that point, as far as you're concerned, is wrong?" Gibson asked the president, to which Bush replied: "Right."

Bush voices support for same-sex civil unions
AFP: 10/26/2004

WASHINGTON, Oct 26 (AFP) - US President George W. Bush stressed Tuesday that he supports states' rights to allow civil unions for same-sex couples, contrary to his Republican Party's official stance, although he still opposes gay marriage.

"I don't think we should deny people rights to a civil union, a legal arrangement, if that's what the state chooses to do," Bush said in an interview with ABC television aired Tuesday.

However, he added: "I view the definition of marriage as different than a legal arrangement that enables people to have rights. I strongly believe that marriage should be defined as a union between a man and a woman."

Asked to comment on his party's opposition to civil unions, Bush said he disagreed with that position. The platform was adopted during the Republican National Convention in New York last month, when Bush officially received the party's nomination for the November 2 presidential election.

Bush favors a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, while his opponent, Democratic Senator John Kerry, feels that each state should decide for itself whether to permit same-sex couples to wed.

Ya I think I heard that before too.

He is against Gay Marriage, not against Gay Unions.

Again, the problem with Gay marriage is the historical/religious context associated with marriage - and I agree with Bush on it.

I also am for Gay Unions but against Gay Marriage.

difference?

the "name" describes the difference. the idea of a marriage is between a man and a woman. two gay guys living together in an "union" are not married, unless they utilize liberal Boston laws.

Did god told you that gay marriage is wrong? I never seen anywhere that god said "Only man and woman can get married."

Good post Spacey.

Yes, it does seem disturbing at first glance. However, I think it's more that he just supports states rights to chose if they want gay unions rather than him agreeing with them. I don't consider myself a republican or democrat. I think of myself as a moderate. I lean towards conservative in that I support strong state rights and I think that is why Bush is supporting the right of the states to decide if they want gay unions or not. I think this is good republican policy. Let the states chose for themselves. Federal gov. stay out. My state is voting soon for this very thing and I'm definately against them. I don't want any homo's having any edit:benefits even closely similar to marriage.

God said it is sin to have homosexual relations- therefore, anything/everything related to homosexuality is wrong. Gay marriage, unions, bars, parties, movies, t.v. shows, websites, photos, audio...you get the point. It's as simple as that.

So did god also create gay penguins, or are they simply selfish hedonists doomed to eternal damnation as well?

I don't know. The bible doesn't talk about gay penguins or how they will be judged. I would assume they will go to penguin hell but thats just speculation heheheheeh.
