Be Cool! Do producers need to know play instruments"?

I got some questions to discuss...

I read on bonaimusic.nu forums Airwave can play lots of instruments, surely this help him to produce diverse tunes in so many aliases, do you agree"?
I ve read too a Dave Clarke interview where he talks about himself: he doesnt know play any instruments, his productions are based in "trial-error" till he gets a song.

- Im not comparing both producers, but do you think people that dont play instruments can produce a classic or anthem"?
Is techno easy to produce cus there are not big strings and chord scales"?
- What good producers plays anything"?
- Does Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Armin, Ferry, M.i.k.e, play keyboards for example'?
- And the progressive trance/house, maybe the're a lots of drums players uh'? (maybe Tilt dudes, I'm curious about this one)
I know James Holden play guitar, not sure about Oakenfold...

Comments"?

im sure the better producers, know music theory, and can play at least a keyboard. which is obvious, unless they are getting help. and im sure most of the better ones could learn just about any insturment just a few trials.

i would love to see sasha all coked up playin on a grand piano, that would make my day.

Most producers play instruments it just goes hand in hand. Producing can be called playing an instrument too, that instrument being the studio.

Yes!!! Very important, if you know how to play instruments your going to have a better start, and a better knownledge of how things work. I started with the paino then i went to the drums. Paino got me to learn how to read music, and the drums taught me rhythm. If you put them together you know how to make a nice Trance song .

But you don't have to be a instrument player to produce music, but its best if you do play one.

I guarantee that BT plays guitar and piano, if not many other instruments. His classical knowledge shows in the quality of his production work. Sheer genius.

it definately helps to have a background in music theory when producing.. to know what notes sound good together.. harmonics etc.. yhou can alwayhs play it by ear. but knowing hteory and how to play instruments.. gives you a great advantage... after all.. trance is music

to answer the question.. alot of producers dont use music theory when they compile a production.. some tracks its more evident than others.. im not going ot pick and choose but its definately true..

Yeah, BT led me into listening to EDM. He's classically trained and went to Berklee for music in Boston, though he dropped out due to some professional opportunities that came up. It's up there with Juliard for tops for music in the U.S. For other producers, there are different ways to go about creating music, so some is trial and error and others know how to play numerous instruments. It really depends on the style, but you can produce some EDM songs with more technolgical than musical background, like what TTA calls "McProg" though I like some of it.

With the computer software that is out there, it is certainly not necessary to learn how to play instruments, but if you know how it certainly helps A LOT.
