N. Korea & Kim portraits

Anyone else detecting analogy between Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and the report from N. Korea's Xinhua News Agency where claims that "Dear leader's" portraits had been removed from many public places were denied. They succeeded in selecting very Orwellian words: "It didn't happen before, and will never happen,". As u know "Eurasia has always been at war with Eastasia"
Way to go, Dear Kim! \o/

1984 was a science fiction book damn-it.

I'm tired of people always trying to compare to it... You don't see anybody always quoting and using Star Trek as a comparison....

Yoepus, I'm sorry if my post upset you. That's never my intention.

As what comes to 1984 being fiction, you know, political satires are rarely "just fiction". As the readers know, the book was Orwell's criticism to totalitarian states, especially targeted at the Soviet empire.

You're like the first person ever here to care about my feelings here.
That means so much

I never knew anyone cared...

No because in Star Trek the death penalty is abolished as a barbaric act that civilised nations simply dont do...so until America enters civilisation with the rest of us europeans we will sadly never be able to compare to Star Trek!

(The lengths some people will go to have a pop at America eh!)

1984 does apply to the us... and as for europe being so "ahead of the us" and "civilized," i don't think such absolute terms can apply. civilizations seem to go through phases. once upon a time, the us was actually the one with the bright ideas, new vision, etc. i saw this one article in the economist, that was speaking about how the us used to be home to the age of enlightenment... and now we're the one in the "dark ages."

the question is- 1) is it because the us is too powerful, without another power to balance it? are those on top destined to topple? 2) is it because what happened on sept. 11 has scared people to the point where they fear engagement with the world? and what are those terror alerts but the constant threats of war in 1984?

i'm sorry these ideas aren't coherently organized but i still haven't completely sorted out everything in my head, they are just thoughts i have been having. so if you can pick out something, please respond... i want to know if anybody else agrees.

I think its because the US is becoming more and more like Imperial storm troopers - you know, cool and kick ass.

When you think of it you see a transition in the US that is just like Mr. Lucas' griming futurnarian tale - although the real bad guy is Darth Vader (Mr. Bush) he's actually all good inside at the end of the day... and its the real puppet-master, the evil emporer, the one of ailing health but emense power that is the one calling the shots (Mr. Cheney) that must be destoryed the stop the evil spread of the Empire.

Since Mr. Lucas' prophecy is obviously dead on, I think we are likely to see a 2nd death star explosion by the rebel alliance by episode three (though this is conflicting as the Evil Empire only has a 2 episode term limit).

And don't take lightly that Mr. Lucas chose to start his whole tale introducing us to the rebel's leader to be on the desert planet.... this is completely indictive of Arabs being desert people.

No I think it is cos the US and Americans in general are a pretty backwards bunch of people, which then goes on to explain the way you are pursing TWAT, which, to be perfectly honest, is the worst way you could go about it (unless of course your elite realise the fact, that bin Laden also realises, that TWAT benefits not only bin Ladens aim of mustering as much support as is possible for his dreams of toppling Muslim govts, but also allows stupid Americans to follow blindly their rulers dreams of American supremency, AKA Project for a New American Century...)
