I was listening to one of Clarke's older mixes (09/02/2002 Live on Triple J mixup)and I wanted to know how he does his cuts really quickly in time effectively changing the feel of the beat and then he slams it back in. He also has a method where he would repeat bass drums then claps and then slam it back in.

Does anyone know how he does it?

he cuts the music with the trans and the delay button on the effect mixer from pioneer djm 600

so if I get a EFX unit from pioneer I could do that stuff?

Its an old skool hip hop trick called doubling up

i have seen him do it long before the djm 600 was introduced, so its not just down to that

You get two copies of the same record and put the second one one beat behind.
Then cut between the two and it gives the stuttering effect and repeat effect.

You can do it on an efx yes but its not as good or accurate as doing it with a second copy.

You can do that playing the same track in both decks, and using the crossfader, playing the tracks so the drum of track A sounds exactly between two drums of track B. Then you change quickly with the crossfader from drumA to drumB so all the drums of both tracks are played. You can also change from track A to track B so no drums sound, it´s also a very cool trick.

That´s true Freak, actually Dave Clark do it this way. I saw it in some videos. He changes the crossfaders using both hands, it´s not a very difficult trick, just some practice and repeated vinyls.

I had a question about one of the things he does in his Impulz Indoor 2001 video. When he's playing Dave Clarke - The Compass, as it's coming he does something to kill the bass and bring it back like moving some knob, if anyone knows what I'm talking about. Also, what's the deal with him pressing the green button so many times?

hrm on the djm 600 i think the red button turns grean, when you samle & loop...

so maby he is adding a kick or something...

I've been doing this for awhile, its a very simple and effective trick, thanks to the Denon X1500, because its got the matrix input, I can have 2 channels play the same source but then but one of those channels threw the FX unit and have it delay the signal by half a beat, you then assign each channel to each side of the crossfader and bingo, love the mixer for this, its like having 3 turntables when you do as you can still use your other turntable thanks to the matrix system.

Also if you wanna get kinda nuts with it, you can delay the second channel by 1/4 3/4 1/1 and create some really good sounds with it.

What is everyone going apeshit on djm600 for? The only time i've known him to use it is when a club has it, and he isnt able to get his mixer of choice put in.

Dave clarke is very well known for using the TASCAM x-9 mixer.

All djs are not so narrow minded as to limit themselves to the use of equipment that is shoved in their face.

That said the x-9 is certainly not a flawless mixer...it has some problems. But I would guess that the eqs, and shitload of samplers is what hooked clarke.
