Vinyl = higher quality, or so it is said anyway. A waveform completely unedited by digital means is more accurate in recreating the original sound than, for example, a CD.

So it's a record? That seems so archaic. It's hard to believe that a record that you have to play in an old-school record player could sound better than CD-quality.


Is this stuff still popular? Why do they call it vinyl and not simpy a record?

it's depends on what you consider to "sound better" for example, records (vinyl) recreate the original waveform almost perfectly but they also suffer from noise problems such as dust on the surface, and also speed/pitch problems. Digitally the waveform is made up of individual bits of information which are then put together to recreate the original waveform, since it is digital there is no noise or pitch problems.

with dance music, vinyl doesn't instantly make it "higher quality" since the master is digital anyway.

In theory yes but since EDM is originally created in a digital form there will be some form of digital -> analogue conversion to make the vinyl record. Therefore it will be lower quality.

Now just to contradict myself, if the original track is recorded at a higher sample and bit-rate than a regular CD, the vinyl will sound better as there will be less information lost despite the digital -> analogue conversion.

You're definitely right about that. Everything's digital at some point these days, which is why CDs are more popular; people really can't hear much of a difference. CD is also cheaper and more longevous, whereas a vinyl record is much more sensitive to scratching and is "damaged" a bit every time it's played.

I don't think the human can really pick up the difference between the two...only thing I notice between vinyl and CDs are the pops.

It's another one of these debates that never go anywhere, I think the "warmer" sound is bullshit aswell.

In the end, anyone who says they can hear the difference is full of shit. Blindfold them and play the same 2 tracks, one off of a CD, and one off of a Vinyl, and I doubt they would be able tell.
