With laptops; no customs*!
*(at 1200 - 1400S)
I know laptops well, I sell them everyday. In laptops it's not always the performance that counts but things like its weight, portability and power efficiency.Other things like screen quality, in some cases even sound quality. Then you look at it's overall design, and price.
In most of the cases one of very good units to get is from Toshiba. They use deacent hard drives and motherboards. Very little problems with them. You can find a deacent one for 1400. Another aspect of bying one will be set by your (his) needs. Is it for web applications or 3D design...

well Acer is pretty good on laptop and battery so I'ld recommend it. But what does your brother want? If he wants a laptop and get it everywhere, he should get a 13.3 screen. A 15.4 is most of the time called a desktop replacement. It's pretty big to carry, I know because my girlfriend has a 15.4 inchs.
If you want to save most power as possible to save your battery, then stay with Centrino, as you choose. If you want more power, go get a P4.
Bottom line, pick that laptop for a desktop replacement because of the size of the screen. The hardware inside isn't very powerful so you wouldn't be able to run latests games. Basically: DVDs, Internet, MP3s and Word is what should be used with that Acer

Fast make sure the ACER's Hard disk turns 7200RPM and has a 8mb cache. As far as im concerned if thats a postive its an ok buy. I am also somwhat knowledgable in this field as I repair these things. I get sometimes this kind of laptops for under 1k. Im working today - I will look around and let you know .
To all who say Toshiba, let me tell that the most laptops that we fix (probably 70-80%) are two branded : HP/Compaq and Toshiba (I guess this is also due to the high percentage of consumers having them)
I didnt see one Dell in the past year or so, and very very rarely IBM.
One reason of this is Dell uses Western digital hard disks not to compare with pre xs hp era's seagates...

I am just against brand names in what concerns notebooks or desktops. My last post was coming outta my heart and not brain.

A 7200rpm hd on a laptop is much more expensive than a 5400 rpm. And if you add 8MB of buffer instead of 2, you'll pay too much.
If you're using your laptop as a workstation for Word, Internet, DVDs and MP3s, a 7200rpm and even 8MB of hard drive is useless. If you're gamming, now this will become usefull because the buffer will contains more data so the hd will have to spin less in other to get data.
If you're buying a 8MB buffer and using it for Word, the only change you'll notice is Windows booting few seconds faster. Instead of putting money on this, I'ld recommend getting another 512MB of RAM which will much more boost the perfs of the pc/laptop.
