Pentium 4 vs. M ?

Im buying a notebook PC (whatever happened to "laptop?") and I remember hearing some fuss about Pentium 4's and how they had some problems. Is that true?

Better question, which is better, 4 or M?

[Oh, and I think Im going to buy a Toshiba, so go ahead and comment on that too. ]

A P4 might be faster, but the Ms aren't slow at all, and I think they come with built in wi-fi capability?

Edit: In my experiences (with about three or four of them) Toshiba laptops have been great.

depends really..M is slower than P4...but it has a longer battery life, and easier to carry around..(lighter etc...)

you can compare the specs between a M and a P4...the difference is just the battery life and weight...which a M has advantage over the P4..if you need a notebook as a desktop replacement, get the p4.

The main difference is the M isn't as power hungry as the 4 so you're battery lasts longer and the laptop doesn't get as hot. This is a distinct advantage unless its winter and your lap is cold. Not many ppl have a need for that wi-fi crap, its more of a marketing ploy.

btw, you now owe me a sexual favor in return for my intellectual whore help.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P25 that I bought last year. It has a Pentium 4, and although it was one of the older Pentium 4 (the Northwood) it is still pretty speedy, especially burning CDs and the loading times on it is speedy as well. It probably would do pretty well with production, but I bought it mostly for audio recording and editing, but I haven't used it as such considering I've neglected to get an external soundcard and some good studio monitors....

M has been stripped of it's power (not aimed for high end use, gaming, ect) which is why it's lighter and takes less power. Go with the P4 if you want power and plan to game. If not, go for the M, that's what they were designed for.

Check out hardocp / anandtech too.

Damnit!

Well, as of right now Ive got an A70 on my plate with a P4 2.8ghz, 512RAM, 80GBHD as sides. And yes, the only thing I can see being a problem is the weight and battery thing. I needed to upgrade to a 12cell because I wanted a P4.

It wont give let me know how much the damn thing will weigh though.

um.. does anyone here read hardware benchmarks? i guess not.

pentium M's can SMOKE a p4. just go to www.tomshardware.com or www.anandtech.com

let me ask, if pentium M's are so much slower, than why did asus just release a socket adapter so you can use pentium M's on a standard sock 478 mobo? they really are faster.. trust me

i can play hl2 with all the details up at 1280x800 (widescreen)... with a pentium M 1,5 Ghz and a simple Radeon 9700 (64Mb)... AND the battery time is between 3 and 5 hours...

screw P4, get a Centrino
