Speaker Placement

Okay, so I am looking to buy some monitors (Alesis mk2)

however my room is far from ideal, and is a small "L" shape, just wondering how many of you have your speakers set up in the proper equilateral triangle, and if you produce in a small room, do you use and dampening tools to prevent standing waves? My hifi sounds dreadfull in its current possition, but then again, the speakers are on the wall and high up which isnt where my monitors will be.

Any pointers?

LP7

I own a pair of MK2's and I think they great(although invest a bit of time to get used to them and break them in first).

Yes it's ideal to get a good monitor setup(i.e away from corners and walls) but no all of this have this luxury..I don't for one

But my set up is OK as I have plugged my left speaker on 2 holes(the one near the wall and corner) to stop the bass being too loud and in yer face. The right speaker I have only plugged 1 hole. I got this from the Alesis manual.

I also purchased a pair of Auralex pads(glorified foam) to dead the sound a bit. Anyway this is only my opinion and how I work and it's works for me.

I listened to a lot of Trance on my monitors to see how it sounded and now getting closer to the real thing(just a bit more mix practice).

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I see your from the U.K. too, how much did the isolation foam cost and where did you purchase it from, also do you have it on the wall opposite your monitors to absorb some bass?

Cheers for your advice so far, I'll look into other options, also if both my speakers are tight in a corner, will i need to plug both holes up, and also it seems silly on such a precise instrument they offer such a primative solution, just how effective is this and does it alter the dynamics of the speaker?

sorry for all the questions, but I am a skint student and dont wanna fork out 200 odd notes on some equipment that wont offer much better sound quality than my sennheiser hd580's#

many thanks...

LP7

getting used to the sound from the monitors is equally as important as their positioning. but these sound fine for me

No problem LP7...

I got the foam pads from Digital Village when I ordered my monitors and they go underneath my monitors. Quite expensive @ £39.99. Also don't forget to buy good cables(I can't stress that enough, spend a bit of money on them).

I agree with what you said about plugging the speakers. To plug your speakers you will have to try it with and without. It's just speaking from my personal opinion(my bass was overpowing and it gave an exaggerated effect. Sorry I can not find my manual at the mo but I can remember it advising me to plug them. It would not be a problem if I was away from the wall and corner.

Try listening to a few Trance CD's and go from there mate(A/B if you know what I mean).

It's working for Luke in his above pic

Is that a pair of THX Audio ST-XX(X) monitors? Got the ST-90. My first set of monitors, and they sound great.

I went throught some upgrades last week en totally changed everything... I've used the foam things on the wall to prevent a lot phasing in my room which accured a lot before the changes. Now I think the sound is great. I also dampened the wall on the opposite wall the reduce the reflections coming back.

Since ages I have an almost proper triangle also which I must say improved the sound a lot too. Proper speaker placement can change a lot... Before all these changes I had a lot of issues with the acoustics in my room due to the speaker placement and the abundance of phasing. Now it's all solved luckily and I'm very happy must say!
