The way I see it is that the US in having to deal with the political turmoil in Latin America in the 80s and not being able to directly confront the problem with the US being fresh out of Vietnam and American people not ready for another jungle war decided to declare a “War” on Drugs; and as a front to inject American money and influence into the region, Reagan had dear old Nancy appeal to mothers everywhere in a scare tactic. A tangible example needed and Rock not being able to be vilified, as the people being appealed to were children of the sixties, the Govt. used the distant, unknown and at the time odd “techno” scene and the NEW drugs associated with it as a way to gain support for the massive spending. I’m sure everyone’s heard the, ‘the stuff we used wasn’t as dangerous as the stuff now’ line before. The image continued and now is almost status quo, “oh you listen to techno, you must use drugs. What great manipulation on the government’s part to con the masses and allow itself a voter supported blank check? Now as we get older, they’ll need a new scheme, oh wait, we now have the “War on Terrorism”… protect us Uncle Sam, whatever the cost.
sorry for ranting
