Recently Richie Hawtin's played a set at Zouk singapore Dec 22. He did not use the turntables at all. He was actually using a laptop. He is using a technology called Final Scratch which i read in an article. All he had to do was programme the songs into the computer, select the tunes and play them at the press of a button.

so guys wat is your opnion? when i pay to go to a gig, i expect the dj to be working on his set, mixing the music using the traditional mixer and turntable not some prerecorded music from a laptop.

if in the future all big names dj start using the latest technology to dish out their sets, wat would the future of the 12" be like.

The future is digital and nothing can't stop it. But I'm not agree that only pressing a button you have the mix done.

getting paid thousands and thousands dollars to press one or two times a button in a lap top ????? no i don't agree with this ...

it's true that u can't stop the "digitalisation" of the world , but i think it's too much

I for one think it's a fantastic idea! The music selection you can carry with you now? My god, so much more, at the same time you don't have to carry the weight of vinyl. Nothing else has changed, your skills are still required, you still use two turntables and a mixer to play. It's no "push of a button mix" - read up!

Sorry hasnt sommit been missed, this technology is not new, and if it was better an easier to do a set using it, it would be used everywhere, but if you ask any big dj he will prob say there is nothing like vinyl, the quality, the sound and the caracter

Playing digital recordings just doesn't have the 'OOOMPH' deep heavy bass kick you can get off Vinyl, especially if the tracks are in .MP3 format. The whole FinalScratch system still has some latency - around 12ms which is a LOT for live audio application. It is a very nice idea but I wouldn't start selling my vinyl just yet. Digital audio has its applications mostly in consumer / portable markets but analog will NEVER die.

And wouldn't you look like a dork showing up at a party with a laptop instead of with a vinyl case ...

Hawtin will get backlash for this one.........and he'll go back to using vinyl.........if i paid to see him and he showed up with a laptop.......i'd want my money back.

well, if i was going to a rave where some dj was playing off a laptop, my tickets better be fuckin 5 dollars, or i wouldnt go, i wouldnt pay 10 dollars to see someone spin a set off a laptop

there is a dj that gets played on some radio stations in the US who uses the alias "dj master web" or "dj sanford wallace" who doesn't use vinyl, mainly just mp3's. His sets sound very UK i think he is from the UK and from what they say about him he still gets paid a LOT even though he doesn't use vinyl.

digital music just doesn't have that "live" feeling, if you know what i mean. the song always sounds the same when you play it. on vinyl it's different every time because of dust. i think that noise makes the tune sound more alive or whatever.
as for paying to see someone mix songs on a laptop: my winamp does a decent job for me with a Nullsoft Crossfading plugin, so i can be called a dj in a sense
