Going clubbing alone
We see a lot of posts from people who don't go out because they do not want to go alone. Sometimes there's a show you really want to see but don't have anyone to go with. Your buddies might be out of town or your friends would rather go to a bar or hip hop club.
Our advice from TA is:
If you really want to go, then suck it and
Just go alone.
There is no shame. Most of us do it.
There are several benefits:
1. You play by your own rules. You go when you want, come home when you want. You aren't dragged out of the club at the peak because someone has to wake up early or they "just don't feel like staying." Or if you're ready to go home, you don't have to stay for anyone else.
2. It allows you to places you normally wouldn't. Go to underground clubs, small venues, and large events all over the place so long as you handle yourself well and stay safe.
3. You meet new people. You don't have that safety blanket of always hanging out with, and talking to the same people. Most people clubbing will be on a similar wavelength. We're all here because we love the music and the people.
Disadvantages:
1. If you booze heavily or abuse (not just use) drugs you may not have someone to stand by you. I once forgot my way home and wandered around Times Square till I could get my bearings straight.
2. If you have to commute through unsafe neighborhoods at odd hours you gotta play extra safe. (Then just do what I do: party till the sun comes out.)
3. If you're the type who's likely to get into a fight, then, well, it's unlikely that someone will have your back.
It's tough at first but do this a couple of times and you'll start seeing the same people more frequently. Don't stick only to the larger venues like Crobar or Spirit. It's unlikely you'll get to know anyone well. I got to know most TAs by talking to them at smaller places like Table 50. When I moved to NYC, for six months I didn't go clubbing because I didn't have anyone else to go with. Then one day, I just sucked it up and started going alone. Some nights sucked, but some were great because you felt completely free in an environment that allows you to be yourself.
Aight, that's it for now. Please feel free to add or comment. Go out, have fun, stay safe.
