I think its a great thing, and really reckon people that oppose this drug are plain out selfish. I mean what happens to all the 15 year old girls who get pregnant, do they HAVE to have the child and practically ruin their lives? They should be given the chance to build their lives up to a point when they can support their child. Where is the financing when the child is born into a family of kids, the child is practically as good as dead when it comes to protection, food etc with no outside support.

I mean ffs, they all say it's murder killing the baby when its in your stomach, first off, if it's been longer than 1 month then maybe you can bring up that statement, and still it will be false but before the first month, i mean come on.. do we have retards opposing this drug and the whole abortion case or what?

If a child is going to be born, let it be at a time when it is right!

If thats murder, i think they should go criticize all the friggin masturbators out there then, they are killing 1 million children in one hit.

I think anybody who comments in this thread should be careful not to label those who dont agree with them idiots or whatever becuase it is such a touchy thing for some.

There really is no right or wrong remember, just our opinions.

Having said that i think its a really good thing and dont feel it should be in the hands of the health minister.

To those who dont support it, you dont have to use it but i dont feel women who want to should be disallowed.

i'm gonna go with it should be up to the woman to decide if she wants to take it or not, not up to the health minister who has his own political agenda and opinions.

on a side note, do you think the partner should have much input in the descision? there was an episode of secret life of us where alex got pregnant by rex, had the abortion, then rang rex and left a message saying what she did. i dont think its fair that he wasn't involved in the decision and there was no discussion about it.

Of course he should, but sometimes they are totally unaware of the situation (happened to a friend of mine). I think it opens a whole new bag of worms if he doesnt know, but once again its up to the individuals morals to decide these things.

I'm all for this pill, yes it has side effects but so does every other single drug we give people.

Definite yes to this decision being taken out of the hands of any one person. Definite NO to this being turned into another argument about the pros and cons of abortion.

Given that the use of this drug is no more dangerous than undergoing a surgical abortion, there really isn't any legitimate reason why its availability shouldn't be controlled by the TGA as opposed to the health minister exclusively. Debate about the morality of abortion aside, the regulation of this drug should be determined by a medical body that has the knowledge to determine how safe it is, not by a health minister who most likely (most definitely in the case of Tony Abbott) does not have the qualifications to make an informed decision on the matter.

It's worth pointing out, by the way, that use of this drug is fairly rare in countries where it is freely available (only 4% of abortions in New Zealand are performed using RU486 for instance) and the abortion process isn't really any simpler or more "convenient" than those performed surgically (it's a two-step process with RU486, a one step process surgically) so I don't think that making RU486 freely available is likely to have much impact on the abortion rate one way or the other. All it does is give women a choice and it makes the process much easier and cheaper for women in more isolated areas who may not have easy access to an abortion clinic. Frankly, I can only see this as a positive.

and back on topic, at what point is the unborn considered as something that's actually alive, even so a chain of events had begun before then leading to it... It takes two, and if you're gonna do it, *both* should be responsible for the possibilities... although there's a lot of varying circumstances where this could be easily argued as a good option, but that's probably more so the very rare cases, so I guess there can be room for it then. But you can really argue this forever every which way... blargh blargh..

yes, it's their kid too. although i suppose quite a few partners would prefer to not know, or if they did, not care... I think it'd say a lot about each person - if she just went and got the abortion and didn't say shit to the partner, or the partner being like "meh, fuck off" or whatever.. sounds very selfish.
could atleast talk about it, and say what if... really should be able to both come to support a decision together, and one that you won't later regret.
