Armin in a club

well i saw Armin for the gazillionth time yesterday and i must say i hadn't been impressed by a set of his for a long time. but i thought i'd give him another chance and he actually blew me away! 4 hours of quality progressive, trance and tech-trance, very little cheese.. he picked out the best tracks from the past few months instead of the worst ASOT tracks as he usually seems to do.

what's important is that it was a relatively small venue, which leads me to the conclusion that Armin is at his best in a clubby environment, especially taking into account that he really felt good yesterday, you could tell by the expressions on his face, his body language.. it was spontaneous, it was natural. he could do his own thing.

at big events, i often have the impression that his enthousiasm is not genuine, he seems to make too much effort to get the crowd going, waving and jumping every two minutes and selecting the cheesiest tracks.. i think his ambition to be the n°1 dj is hurting him in all aspects, which is a shame because he can be great, as he proved yesterday.

i hope Armin realised that himself as well.

That's exactly what armin was best at doing. Playing a set that most of the people hadn't predicted. He needs to do it more often however, and distinguish himself as a DJ from his radio show & label. By doing so he may actually win over more of the people who he had on his side in 2001/2002

Yeah, but he's not trying to win old fans back so much as they didn't ever vote him to the number one position in the poll

I have 2 complaints about Armin as a live DJ and they are....

1) He seems to think he is a hard/tech trance DJ and his Bass seems to be going in a million directions which is very un appropriate.

2) He has the ability to play amazing uplifting/melodic trance (and the connection to play alot of unknown tracks 5 months before they are released) that would make a 10X better impression than his current sets.

Alot of people bash him for being the king of fluff, but in all honesty, I'd rather him play his 'fluff' live than what he is doing now. 2004 was an awesome year for him... Universal Religion was an awesome CD and people in Ibiza, Amsterdam, London really realised that this guy is a mindblower. Gotta say that with the exception of a couple of GREAT ASOTS (I won't take it away from him, they were great which is why I feel I should be so critical of his bad), he hasn't lived up to what I know he's capable of.

I agree. I saw him 3 times last year (2005). First time I saw him he played a lot of stuff from his ASOT show and I enjoyed it because it was a time where I was really listening to ASOT a lot and wanted to hear the songs out in a club. Not to mention it was a first time Armin experience. Then I saw him in June, and he was late showing up so when he finally came on everyone woulda been happy no matter what he played. BUT, it was a mixed set of awesome tunes so it really was great set anyway. September, tech-trance... I think it was awesome because it was something different but apparently he did it again this past January. This is not the style everyone has loved Armin for and I hope maybe its a "phase". Because when I am in the Tobacco Warehouse this summmer standing outside catching a summerbreeze I wanna be swept into the clouds, not having my chest caved in by heavy-bass thumping tech.

I'de say in 2003. He rocked then, I saw him for the first time at a club and he played some awesome tunes, like his two remixes at the time of Mark Otten's "Mushroom Therapy" and his remix of Motorcycle's "As The Rush Comes" and to hear that one live on the big speakers was awesome. He also played a few other big tunes at the time, like one of my favorites.."Destination" by Sirocco. Universal Religion and Universal Religion 2004 were great CDs, better than his ASOT ones. The second time, in 2004, when I saw him, he was okay, but his set didn't impress me as much as it did the first time, even though the first time I missed the last half hour of the set (had to go to bed, get up for school, was still in high school). I haven't seen him since then. If his sets have picked up then next time he comes, i'll find a way to go.

I seen him 2 weeks ago at a event. He was good, but i thought it wasnt much of a journey. Im not as into trance as i used to be so that could of been a factor but it just seemed he was playing hits from the past 6 months to a year. Didnt really hear pre 2005

If anyone's noticed the neverending problem here:
he'll never satisfy everybody.....

This thread is ONLY 9 posts long and already there are 2-3 ppl
in each corner: fluffly/uplifting vs tech-trance/bangin

Everyone has their preference.
I'm on the side of uplifting with occasional bangin tracks throughout...

We should all be proud of AvB. He is the current Best. In My opinion though!

I have seen him 4 times so far live and I can say that he never dropped his peformance down compared to other gigs I have been to. He is incredible.
