We've all heard that sound: suppose there's a pad or some other effect going as the kick is beating, and sometimes the compression effect is really obvious.
Now, suppose the kick is removed, but we still hear the pad pulsating as before. How do you get say, Ableton or Cubase to make this effect?
I'm a newbie, so to me, muting the kick removes most of the compression effect, so the pad no longer 'pulsates'. Somehow I want the program to allow the kick to affect the compression, without actually mixing it in.

Sidechain the pad with something else than the kick I suppose. I've never tried it tho.
You could also try using some other compressors that don't color the sound as much or not having the ratio on your compressor so high - it's all about playing around with the sound.

Talking about Sidechaining, are there any Fruity users out there who properly sidechain, rather than using the peak controller? The problem that I am having is that you cannot have a mono signal from a stereo channel in Fruity. The sidechain works, but only comes out of say the left channel that it is panned to from the source track. I know Cubase has the ability to get a mono signal from the stereo group, settin g the group track to Stereo Dual Panner mode. Is there a plugin to change the stereo groups signal to mono, or does anybody know if there a workaround to this problem?
Thx.

In FL6's mixer there's a little knob under the section where you instert FX for controlling the stereo separation. To make track mono, just turn it to the right.
And to do sidechaining I use Sidekick
Don't mute it. Just pull the volume all the way down. This way the compressor will still get the signal as Pjotr G mentioned. If you just mute it, the compressor will have no signal to sidechain to.

that depends on your routing.
If I turn my kick volume down, nothing gets sent to the sidechain.
my mixer has a little knob and if it is pressed the output gets sent to the main output bus, and otherwise it doesn't

True, I was more talking about when using the Compdare compressor for instance. Using that one, you can put the volume down and still have the sidechain effect .
