Its very diffcult task to pick between the two, both are masterpieces; equally good.
I dont think you need to look beyond Armin, Tijs, Sasha and Pvd as you mentioned. They are complete in itself for a trance listener. But still if you feel the need you may try these artists too:
Menno de Jong
Jonas Steur
Thomas Datt
Manual le Saux
Ronski Speed
Paul Moelands
Pedro del Mar
DJ Shah
Jose Amnesia

Artists you should avoid:
Gabriel & Dresden (live sets only, some individual production are ok)
Markus Schulz (all hype)
Ferry Cortsen (waste of time)
DJ Sammy (all marketing, zero music)
Carl Cox (waste of time) |
I fail to see how ISOS4 and ISOS5 are masterpieces.
I fail to see how one doesn't need too look beyond just 4 DJs.
And for that matter, why are you putting Sasha in the same basket with PVD, Armin and Tiesto? It's not like they produce/play same kind of music.
Oh, and I fail to see how Ferry is a waste of time.
Really great post. Someone should archive it.

Wow.

As for my advice, listen to a bit of everything. I by no means am an expert on any genre as I spend my time meandering through it all. At first I was all trance, all supersawed out, all the time. Now I've gotten into mcprog trance, prog trance, tech trance, hard trance, psytrance, some hardstyle, house, prog house, deep house, downtempo, ambient, minimal, breaks, drum and bass, pretty much everything electronic. There IS a world out there beyond the top jocks. |
Totally.
I started with crap from VIVA and MTV, then I discovered trance and after roughly 2-3 years of trance I started exploring new genres (because I'm not delighted by today's trance) and now I have a bit of everything, such as techno, electro, downtempo, ambient, IDM, goa, psychedelic, breaks, progressive house, industrial, rhythmic noise, EBM and so on. Techno and progressive house are genres I enjoy the most lately.
