using one synth only!

Ive noticed a lot of producers on this forum use many different synths. to create one track or a 16 bar loop.

is it necessary to have a synth for each layer in your arsenal

for example:

pro 53 for pads
pro 53 for leads

v-station for bass
rebirth for acid
absynth for atmosphere and weird fx
moog modular for more fx and textures
vanguard for arps
superwave for an accompany arp
fm7 for your main riff
albino for pads
battery or redrum for your percussion

and so forth

or you could take this even further

like so v-station for techno
albino for trance
pro 53 for dream and progressive
moog for psych
absynth for chillout
bassline for breakbeats and drum n bass

and so forth

or does it make more sense to have one virtual analog soft synth(that can do it all)

from leads, soft to grungy and dirty ,to pluck leads ,distored leads,
to supersaw in your face leads to pads and bass etc.

so i guess what im getting at it is fun to use many different synths to make your tune , but isn't it a lot easier to have one synth that does it all for any styles and changing trends?

There is stuff the Virus just cant do but you can make an unbelievable number of sounds on it. Then again, you can make an unbelievable number of sounds on alot of modern VA synths.

Its nice to have alot of toys to play with, but if you really focused on getting the most out of your isntrument, you can build whole songs, whole albums with just the one synth.

At the end o the day, you dont need more than 1 instrument really. Having more is just more potential to create sounds which you absolutely cannot on the one you have (due to technical limitations). But those are very specific and in the case of the Virus there really isnt very many of them.

i don't have much experience in making full length tracks lately, have been making more clips than ever... but to wat i experienced, each synth would have a that distinct sound that good ears would know it's from that particular synth (not all the times though)... cuz it's done by the same person, you yourself. so, what would i do is i'll try to make several sounds from different synths and try to incorporate them.. some sound good together and some don't. i suppose it's my personal limited knowledge that i wasn't able to make different sounds from the same synth, so... it's possible though. i've heard some nice sounds from v-station, i'd recommend that.

i could in theory make all my tunes out of a v station

lead: v station
pads: v station
bass: v station

drums and shit would have to be sampled but i consider drums a different game from lead, pads and bass

I've made some tracks using soley Atmosphere. Got to be the nicest sounding VSTi around. Except for the percussion that is, but pads, leads, basslines can all come from it.

Usually I use a combo of the Virus, Atmosphere and ABL. They'd be my mainstay synths.

I second KillaDJ's post...that v-station can do almost anything if used correctly. I prefer albino or z3ta though for some things.

Word. Every producer should tatoo this on their forehead so when they look in the mirror in the morning they know not to succumb to G.A.S today.

Haha, check my V-Station soundbank. It does everything from A to Z
It usually replaces most of the synths in my productions. I can say that my productions consist of 60% v-station.

i cheat and just fiddle my lead patch to sound like a pad by adding some atk and more release

maybe kill off a sawtooth and add a sine or something for the sub-part of the pad

i dunno, its all in the sound

just fucking tweak it out til it sounds right man
