why are dual processors so important?

i was just asking. Is it possible to run certain programs/vsti etc on one processor and other programs/vsti effects on the other processor, if so how would that work. give me some insight as to why a dual amd or intel 2.4 would be better than a single 2.8? and which is better in your opinions? thanks.

No.

Because 2.4 + 2.4 = more than 2.8

It just does supermultitasking, you can run alot more vstis and stuff at once. The operating system chooses which processes run on which core automatically, you have the ability to control this manually but the OS picks it better than we can, allowing you to take advantage of the extra speed without having to do anything.

There is more to computing speed than the clockrate, but dual cores dont quite run at twice the speed of an equally high clocked single core, but it is still more speed for your money on a dual core.

If you are thinking about buying a dualcore cpu, make sure you check out the Intel Duo Core 2. It's awesome

More important is to check whether your host can actually do the multithreading...

For example, I bought a strong AMD Dual Core CPU for that specific reason (more tasks at the same time), though FL Studio still runs on only one core (CPU never gets higher than 50%).

I really hope they implement that stuff in the future

Cubase 3 has very good SMP support. Since a lot of VSTs tend to run parallel in the chain, you can literally almost double your throughput (i.e. run twice as many VSTs). Not quite double, obviously, but it's a huge improvement.

Why are duall cores better? Well if you audio program supports it, like Cubase sx 3.1 for example that I use.. Here is an example..

(my gaming machine)
AMD 64 4000+ 2.4 ghz cpu, audio project is at 90% running multiple vsti' audio tracks, plugins and so on..

(My audio machine using same audio card)
Intel core duo - duall core, running at 2.4 ghz , same project is at 35%

So I guess that explains it.. I can pretty much load up 3 times more plugins and vsti's on the duall core..

(old intel p4 2.66 ghz)
Same project hangs showing 100% cpu usage.. I can't eaven open the project without locking up the system shortly after the first screen.

It has been rumored that quad-core cpu's will be out sometime next year. Might want to wait unti lthen, or buy parts that will be compatible.

yep just upgraded to a core 2 duo system e6600 with 4 cache. It runs at 2.4 by default but these things are great overclockers too and i have mine running at 3.6ghz now

oh btw it is indeed possible to tell an app to only use one core and another app to use another core. Just go task manager in windows and right click on the app and set affinity to whichever core you want it to use
