Smiley DJ first club gig... w00t

Hello everyone, Ive had a set of 2 numark ttxs for about a year now, and before that I had the ol' numark tt1600s belt drives!! I been mixing off an on just for fun, mostly the music that I like

Anyways, I have my first DJ gig this weekend, friday and saturday... both nights start at 930 and go until about 3. Thats a long time! I fear that I dont have enough music / variety of music between my approx 130 record collection... Well Im lacking hiphop to be exact. Ive got some on my laptop, and I guess the best way to do it is the plug my laptop into a spare line on my mixer and use Traktor DJ Studio to adjust the mp3s tempo.. But that still means I have to switch off and mix between turntables and laptop

Dunno, guess im kind of nervous.. Ive been mixing for a while, and pretty good at beatmatching and crossing over etc, but I dont think I have done it enough between genres of music, like breakbeat to hiphop etc..

gotta start somewhere though!

Nice! Have fun. Gotta get thru that fear. The first time I played out i was shaking like a leaf. But about 20 minutes into it I calmed way down and started to feel really comfortable. Just gotta get thru the first 20 or so minutes. Remember that when you start off with your first record. The uncomfortable feeling is not going to last. It will go away, I promise.

Rock On,

Mike

I will be djing until 3 am, then I have an exam at 8.

Tell me, how smart is that? I cant resist.

BTW what is the community opinion on playing the same tracks over again?

If its exactly the same one?

If its a different groove of same song?

Does it depend on the audiance?

+1

jetting to the can for a piss mid-set is tricky enough, to drop a duece is impossible

Damnit I just found out something else about my gig

There will be a difference age audiance there at the first hours, older than younger.. So I will need older than younger music that I do not have! Well I will try to get some stuff together, but I respectively heard the owner tell me something about "jazz" and "oldies"

Any recommendations ?

Layer some Frank Sinatra over a house beat

Then again, look at some Deep House, jazzy atmosphere in those tracks.

Good luck bud! Congrats on making your first club gig. I hate to sound like a pessimist but be prepared for a lot of BS on your first night (don't get caught off guard like me):

What kind of club is it? Are you playing for a Top 40 Club? Time to dig out those Promo Only and Ultimix CDs... or borrow some emergency Now CDs from your preppy friends.

Bring a blank sheet of paper and a couple of pens. People will want to give requests and you will not be able to remember all of them. Not remembering/acknowledging a request is likely to piss someone off.

No matter what you do, someone is going to get pissed off (it just happens, you can't please everybody. Just make sure that the important people (namely the people that hired you) are pleased.

There will be unreasonable requests or requests that you simply can't handle ("can you play some Metallica" while you're in Deep House mode). Just be polite and don't be afriad to say "no".

As for your different aged audiences, reading the crowd is vital. Get the girls dancing, and the guys will follow. Also, your requests list will be a good indicator of where you should steer your set.

Last but not least, go in there with a good attitude and have some fun. Some people will NEVER be pleased no matter what you play or how much you play it, so don't let them put you down. Most of the wankers at the Top 40 pubs have no idea how much time and effort you've put into your mixing, much less how much money you've spent on your tunes, so just shake it off and keep going.

Hope this helps. This is just what I've picked up while doing Top 40 gigs. I'm still trying to get a proper EDM gig, but we all have to start somewhere...

Understandable, that helps out
I have a reliable resource for the top 40 club, at least

I have no idea what the club is like; Ive never been there nor seen it. Thats why I need to be prepared for anything.. I did talk to a manager and found out the above info..

Requests.. Arr
It would be nice if they had internet at that club, then I could acknowledge at least some requests. If anyone asks for alabama, im going to start breaking records
