Freedom of Speech in the UK

quote:
Cartoons protester found guilty

A British Muslim has been found guilty of soliciting murder during a London rally against cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad.
Umran Javed 27, of Birmingham, was also convicted of stirring up racial hatred by a jury at the Old Bailey.

Javed told a crowd of hundreds at the February 2006 protest: "Bomb, bomb Denmark, bomb, bomb USA."

He had claimed the chants against the two countries were "just slogans" and that he regretted saying them.

Cartoons protester found guilty

Another fine example of double standards on Freedom of Speech.

No, theres a difference between being free to speak what you want and this-

quote:
She said the law was also clear that free speech "should not be misused to insult, abuse or threaten people in such a way that it will stir up racial hatred".

Which is telling people to commit acts of homicide.
It's that damn simple.
Then again you think David Duke has anything of worth to say which tends to be more or less a big mark against your ability to discern between racism and any kind of objectivity because racism by itself is simply a complete absence of objectivity towards other people.

^^ exactly. there is an inherent difference between expressing an opinion and inciting violence. stiff shit to radical islam.

also, as far as i am aware, the UK (like australia) doesn't have anything like the US' first amendment protecting free speech.

The media does that all the time.

Yes, to be fair "The Media" has been getting away with 'murder' (only a close second to most governments! ) so to speak in somewhat literal terms for years, not helped by the fact it's run by either governments or a handful of rich magnets who's campaign donations are too generous to ever really ignore by anyone thats in government.
So, just means as an educated person you really have to go digging for any semblance of truth and honest criticism because you certainly won't go finding it on major publishers.

What to do about it?
Well theres not much you can do about it down at the bottom of the rung working your job or going to school, earning that wage and given a civil rights to bitch and moan. Youre nothing to these people, a few voices of dissent doesnt cost them anything and if you carry on publically making a nuisance of yourselves by advocating murder, congratulations chump, you've just made another multinational corporation that bit richer by being delightfully noisy and ugly enough to sell a story.

Way I figure it, the only way to get your say in the modern world is with the $, get rich, hack them apart from the top down. A prole with a gun, bomb, loudhailer or a placard never really changed much down the bottom for long and if they do, its a minor speed-hump and then back to normal.
Throw a million at someone for something, you'll get heard. Hell it works for Paris Hilton, most has-been pop stars and thrashed out actors any other day of the week ending in a Y over anything else in the week that might actually have some useful interest for people to learn about.

Very nicely said. I should save it somewhere.
