I brought it up, because I thought it was relevant.
Russia is a bully.
Since 1917, Chechnya has actively sought independence, which Russia has never granted. Chechnya Timeline
Maybe not to Belarus though...
With Georgia, it seems a reluctant Russia may have let its satellite finally go; under the constant shadow of a giant. |
Alright, alright ... since you're so persistant, I'll answer.
First of all, once the Baltic sea pipeline will be completed, there will be no more so called "Russian bullying". Because then Russia wont have to beg these transit countries to allow transit of oil for 500 percent discount of gas/oil to these bully states. The oil will flow to Europe without interruptions or confrontation ;-)
As with independence movements - well, well. UK, Canada, Spain and other developed countries have their own problems in the area. But you dont hear them granting independence to the regions, do you? Russia is protecting its sovereignity. Because if Russia just lets every region to separate, the country would disintegrate and weaken and the demise of Russian people will start. Even in USA in Hawaii native peoples who were occupied by US forces in 1903 are calling for independence, which is vaguely heard.

The oil situation, I'll give kudos to Russia. They shouldn't have to subsidize their former satellites of oil now that they are no longer satellites.
The western nations have accepted the sovereignty of foreign states long ago. It probably took armed revolt to do it in some instances, but the parent nation usually got the message and granted independence.
Grozny is one of the most dangerous capitals in the world. It is clear that the Chechnyans want their independence, and the longer Russia draws out the conflict, the longer the turmoil will continue. Russia will never subdue Chechnya, and the sooner they realize that, the better.
That is something western nations have realized and dealt with long ago.
