This is at a house party. The main concern is adjusting to the speaker/monitor setup and being able to find some sort of combination (headphone volume, split cue maybe?, earcup method, etc) that'll allow me to hear each track distinctly when I'm beatmatching. Also, what do u guys do to ensure your equip stays safe the whole night?

to protect ur gear i would get some sheets of plyboard (or wotever it's called) and cut it, if necessary, so that it stand about 18inches above the surface of the table/desk u will be mixing on. then just attach them around the desk on the front and the sides. u may need to invest in a couple of little desktop lights too so u can see wot u are doing.

You sound like you never mixed before. It's a bit late for a crash course, so good luck.

To ensure your gear stays safe, keep looking at it.

Just keep an eye on it. Usually people wont fuck with your stuff if you are standing right there.

As for the cueing, it depends on a couple things, including volume, speaker placement, and monitors. Will you have any small speakers pointing directly at you? If not, things can get a bit complicated.
Just listen in your earphones and you'll be fine. You might have to crank the volume a bit (or find a small pair of speakers to put on your booth/table).

BTW, check your PM.

make sure the subs aren't near you. I did a house party where they put the 2 dual 18's on either side of the booth and I stood on stacked up tables... holy shit its hard to beatmatch when it feels like the earth is shaking from underneath you.

I used to play a club that had half of their subs UNDER the DJ booth. Talk about feedback issues.
