I was feeling positivelly apathetic about US elections with candidates like Obama, Billary,McCain, Giuliani bring nothing new to the table or positive so I am glad to have seen this republican debate yesterday

I only saw a bit of the republican debate but I kind of learned about this man Ron Paul for the first time and I must say that he spoke in refreshingly new and direct manner that really distinguished him from all the other candidates . I have said before that I really don't care for currecnt left or right of American politics where they are largely the same on foreign policy with deeply compromised fundemantals and apparently RP is a libertairian who now poses as a republican.

His points are really something new and he was very serious without being phony . Basically he argues for smaller governments and non intervenionist but not isolationist foreign policy and he was one of the few against wars on Iraq and Serbia for one, deeming them illegal. He also argues for smaller governments and abolition of income tax and he is consitutional so he knows what he is talking about, There is this article from him that really struck about "Democracy" really not being sinonymous with freedom and this is something I always felt and he puts it much more suscintly and how this confers to the foreign policy disasters of US in recent times. So what are his chances? I must say he positively outshined Giuliani and McCain as he was more serious and confident than either. Is this someone that can get elected?

I am really impressed by this speach by anyone let alone a US senator in the US senate. It talks about the need for a return to the republic in the US and return to peace and law instead of empire building that is hurting everyone right now including US

Obviously you have him in the signature so I assume you know him well. Where does he come from and is he someone that can be elected and how serious is he running for president ?

He's the only candidate that I actually want to vote for, but his chances aren't good at all.

What are his chances? Not good I'm afraid. The Republicans hate him even more than the democrats. Ron Paul believes in the Constitution...and this means he stands for less government and more liberty ACROSS THE BOARD, including on social issues. This angers social conservatives who want to use government as a tool to promote their religious beliefs. They support things like prayer in school, teaching creationism, keeping pot smokers in jail, increased censorship of TV, radio, internet, etc.

Paul also believes in a strong DEFENSE (the key word here)...which greatly angers the Neocon war hawks who believe the US government has a moral obligation to expand and "liberate" the world from oppressive regimes. They basically think it's a good idea to be on the offense...to overthrow leaders that we don't like and replace them with US friendly governments in an attempt to reshape the world.

So in the end, Paul stands against the democrats when it comes to expanding the welfare state and increasing government controls over the economy. He believes taxation and regulation should be greatly reduced, not increased.

And he stands against republicans when it comes to expanding government through "daddy knows best" moralistic legislation...and when it comes to starting pre-emptive wars overseas and being the world police.

You were the one who first brought this guy to my attention. Ive been liking him more & more as a candidate but im afraid your right about his chances being very slim.

Who is Ron Paul?

This guy is incredible. I really have just been so disgusted with politics I haven't even bothered with them for most my life, but this guy really has me excited. If anybody is on facebook and would like to help me start a group for this guy I'd really appreciate it.

He's a pretty interesting character. I really hadn't considered him much at all until some recent posts here as well as the debate. Of course I don't agree with a number of things he stands for, but there's a good handful of things I do support. Overall I think he'd make a pretty decent choice as President.

Too bad the Republican Party has flown the coop off to the far Right, however. He might have actually held his own a coupla decades ago, but certainly not in these neocon-led times in bed with Christian fundamentalists. He's got no chance in hell, unfortunately.

every Republican Presidential nominee up until this moment has been will be endorsed by the "Crazy Christian fundamentalists" by default whether it be McCain, Rudy, Romney...

i think your trying to drive a wedge. it's a typical Donkey party tactic when it comes to this shit.

Exactly my point, with the exception of Paul. Granted, every one of those front runners mentioned has their weaknesses. McCain has a bit of trouble with endorsement by some of the wingers (though I'm sure they'd come around if he wins the primaries), Rudy on some of his social issues (though he's probably the biggest neocon in the group), and Romney with his Kerry-like flip-flops. However they've also done their work in trying to appease to the base of the Republican party, which is decisively, well, very much to the far Right. I don't think that's much of a disagreeable point, is it?
