I don't have a ton of time to get into exactly why I like the following albums, but I know we have somewhat similar tastes in music, so these are some of my all time favorites that I hope you'll dig:
Medeski, Martin, and Wood - "The Dropper," "End of the World Party (Just in Case)" & "Combustication"
The Dropper is a bit more traditional, Combustication is a little bit more modern, and End of the World party is heavily electronic influenced.
Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue"
Flamenco Sketches is an all time favorite - most relaxing song I've ever heard.
Sarah Vaughan - Any Compilation of hers that has her version of "Summertime" on it. Absolutely brilliant, my all time favorite female vocalist.
John Scofield - "A Go Go" and "Uberjam"
A Go Go is a CD by scofield accompanied by MMW, very chill and groovy - Uberjam is a Scofield and friends CD that is absolutely unreal.
Brad Mehldau - "Largo"
Brilliant Jazz pianist, this CD has been one of my favorites for the past few years. His cover of "Paranoid Android" is amazing.
Soulive - "Turn it Out" and "Soulive"
Another favorite modern jazzz trio, "Soulive" is one of the best live albums I've ever heard.
And finally - it doesn't matter what it is, but you absolutely have to have anything that Charlie Hunter has ever done. My all time favorite Jazz guitarist, he basically created the instrument he plays (a combination Bass/Guitar). Unbelievable performer!
Hope that helps, and really hope you find at least something in there that you like!
Cheers

I like jazz too, but out of all music i like it's probably the one i like the least (comparatively), so i've never had time to dig deeper into it. However i've checked out quite a lot of stuff by John Coltrane and Miles Davis, two obvious "big ones", good stuff. Also i tend to prefer smoother relaxed jazz with a soulful kinda romantic vibe, in contrast to the more insane virtuoso atonal mayhem style.

If you want to start with something somewhere between electronica and jazz, I recommend the MMW CD "End of the World Party (Just in Case)," but otherwise most of the stuff I listed above spans a pretty wide variety of jazz.
Keep me posted on what you find that you like, and I can try to help narrow down some other recommendations |
I liked most of the stuff you wrote, particularly MMW (some of their work reminds me of early 70s prog rock), although it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I wasn't sure how to describe it when I wrote my initial post, but after going through your recommendations, I think what I'm looking for is something more 'spacey', possibly slower too. Guitars, but not like funky electric guitars - more like soft plucks echoed over an atmospheric background. The sample I put up pretty much sums it up, but it doesn't have to be upbeat.
It was good though, I think I'm gonna save a few of those for my 'to buy' list.
