Getting bored of EDM

I'm not sure if I'm just going through a phase or if I'm done for good here. I don't go to parties, I don't go to dance clubs either. Haven't touched my CDJs in months. The main reason I got into EDM in the first place was because I was tired of all the samey sounding pop-rock that plagued the airwaves, and this music provided me with fresh sounds I'd never heard before. But I've listened to so much of it in the past few years that no ammount of ingenuity or originality ever surprises me anymore - I feel like I've heard it all. Overall it's been a great learning experience. I discovered so many new sounds and musical concepts that thought me to listen to music with a fresh set of ears, but there's just nothing left for me to discover anymore.

Been through pretty much every sub-genre of it. Collected all sorts of it - out of my latest batch from beatport, only about 10% I ended up really liking, the rest was below my expectations and I got bored of in a matter of days (even though I chose them carefully). There's barely any EDM left on my mp3 player save for some old mid-90s prog house tracks, an old Funk D'Void set and some LSG tracks.

Lately I've been getting back into accoustic music (something I hadn't touched in ages), digging up stuff from the 70s mostly.

Has anyone else gone through this? Or just long periods of being bored of EDM?

I'm guessing you've just burnt out, maybe go to another genre you like, and maybe sometime later you will get back into EDM. Just my 2c

I agree.

I've been in love with EDM for years, perhaps more so than anyone else I've ever met, but even I get sick of it occasionally. Only takes me about two days of boring Jack Johnson before I'm right back into it.

Just take a break; you'll come back.

Well, you wouldn't be the first one. Known examples of guys getting bored of EDM are DJ Revibe (of Flutlicht / s.h.o.k.k.) or Andrea Ribeca (of Nu Nrg)

Sometimes I have days too, where I'm bored of EDM and then I just listen to some other stuff, mostly Rock or the 80s. But usually I listen to EDM again very soon

Yeah but what I'm talking about isn't just occasional down days, it's something I've been experiencing for a few months now. I only have the occasional day when I'm particularly 'in the mood' for it.

Take a break. Two years ago i started listening to a lot of rap, and for almost a year that's what i listened to 90% of the time. During a years time i didn't have a clue about anything new edm-related.

I hit that point in 2004 with trance. I was fed up of remakes, of uninspired crap from armada/coldharbour etc being so big. It bored me. So I looked in many other ways. throughout that time I got into techno, joris voorn, kanzyani, kowalski, preach, liebing etc and began to discover psy, allbeit cheesy at first, astrix, skazi etc, it was different from what i'd been into, so worked at the time. Shortly thereafter, I found techno going towards the mimimal phase (I liked the energy in loop techno or funky techno) so i pretty much delved into psy fulltime, finding morning psy and progressivepsy at the time. By now, progtrance/proghouse (not the schulz kind tho) had got good again, shiloh, son kite, ticon, tegma, vibasphere, antix, jaia were all appealing to me, plus the finnish sounds, kuisma, beetseekers etc.

I also got into rock more. I liked odd songs but began to appreciate the drumming & guitar & bass combinations, and how good people had to be to play it live. Then I found shpongle and shulman and that pretty much leads me upto where I am now. If I get bored, I go ba ck to rave, breakbeat-hardcore, drum & bass, trance (1992-2003) and the rest of what I'm into now. I consider it a maturing of tastes, not because everyone else was into it, but because I needed to for myself at that time.

And now ? I'm loving trance with acid in, either old goa, new goa, or stuff like olmec heads, art of trance etc. Rather than being totally and utterly into new music, I just know there is more than enough that's been made over the years that I missed, and by exploring that, as well as balancing it with the bit of new that is good, I'm pretty much happy with music again

That's exactly my sentiment.

I listen to hardly any new music because I'm too busy going back through my old collection and buying all my old stuff in higher quality or just generally organising it. It's heaps of fun.

Often I'll look for different mixes of old favourites, I've dug up some decent stuff that way, such as Jon Johnson's remix of Skydive.

I think I will always be in this sort of period.
Mostly I just listen to Rock/Pop (Ramones, Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, Queens of the Stone Age, Gang of Four...etc)
but every once a while I'll listen to edm, trance and goa... depends on my mood.
I've got little edm on my mp3 player nowadays tho...
