Do you feel that wearing a shirt & tie is appropriate at any stage below the interview (if there is one) level?

Of course, it's assumed that you dress up real nice to interview unless you're told otherwise. But what if I just want to speak to the manager *about* open positions, or ask about the status of my application?

Career services told me that I should, but I'm thinking that it would be so inappropriate and out of place. I agree with them that I should be clean-cut, but damn.

Maybe a polo and some nice jeans? Or does it even fucking matter?

just go dressed however you'd have to be if you worked there (or at least around that same level).

Well, I'm going to probably wear a plain, non-logo polo shirt, dress pants and shoes. But I suck at fashion so bad. I don't even know if I should tuck the polo shirt in or not.

If you have the clothes to look nice, wear them. Actually, shit, if you have the clothes to look nice, what are you doing getting a job in retail for?

I suppose retail is a really general word though. As far as basically any job interview is concerned though, anything you wouldn't be expected to wear a 3-piece suit for is probably something you should wear a tie, dress shirt/pants and dress shoes for.

edit: and dress gloves. Don't forget yer dress gloves.

What if I wore a dress shirt, top button unbuttoned (edit: not untucked), with no tie? I'm seriously considering this.

You mean top button unDONE? If the shirt is tucked in and you have a nice belt + nice shoes on, then yes..that would be entirely appropriate.

Also, be clean shaven, don't smoke before you go in (if you're a smoker), and don't chew gum!!
