dont laugh!

is there a possibility that a needle might be "worn" and that it may damage vinyl? my dad told me it could, and i'm wanting to believe cos he grew up in the "vinyl records" era. i know nothing of turntables, needles and such...so help me out here!

also, what's the best way to protect a vinyl record i dont plan on playing and want to keep as a souvenier??

i presume so, using a needle that is worn, so that it has a rough edge, probably equates geting a compass and scratching it around the track for a good few minutes.

It does damage vinyl but the needle has to be pretty badly worn, you should mantain your stuff regularly anyways

Wen your normally listen to vinyl, the needle slowly damages your vinyl.
But a damaged needle or something like that can make that process go alot faster :P

The more weight you have on the needle, the more wear on the vinyl...

Store vinyl in a cool, dry location, away from the sun, sealed from air (but not too tight, don't want to warp it) and it should last almost forever.

Absolutely a needle will damage vinyl. I have experience from the old 45 and 78 days. We had to replace them often back then and I see no change in the mechanics these days unless you're using a diamond stylus or something.

Protect vinyl by protecting it in it's cover and don't expose it to temps where it will warp. Common sense here. Clean it with a velvet rag and some vinyl cleaner or light oil.
