So...WHY do you produce?

I wrote this in another thread:

It seems like lots of tracks aren't "expressions" of anything, but just the end result of semi-randomly filling in blank space in a sequencer until something "release-worthy" happens to come together.

For so many electronic musicians the "electronic" part seems to be overshadowing the "musician" part...

Why do you produce?

Do you want the fame and wealth -- to be the next Oakenfold or Tiesto?

Are you simply a computer nerd fascinated by synthesis?

Do you want to try to express emotions through sound?

Do you just want to get some dance floors moving?

[Not suggesting these purposes are mutually exclusive, of course.]

these choices aren't mutually exclusive by any means. I, for example, love making music but also try to increase my chances of getting heard by a broader audience & aim for releases.

I become insane when I don't produce for more than 2 weeks.

I start drumming on everything I have around me. Humming melodies and pretending I can beatbox. I need music production to keep me from going insane.

i first started producing beacuse my mind exploded with ideas i never got out. after getting them out i was somehow empty and the results didnt end up where i hoped beacuse my knowledge was bad. bommer.

then i started just playing with loops and stuff for the fun of it with no thinking behind, and i discovered that this worked as great therapy for me. at the same time i played alot with efex like equlizers, distortion, filters, compressors etc and learned how they worked and improved my sound some . so with the improved soundquality the inspiration and motivation came back.

then i got myself some monitors, better headphones, better soundcard and i improved soundquality even more by learning more eq technics. so far everything in reason. i got some hardware synths and learned how to program them but as I only knew reason I needed to learn new sequencer which is where im at now.

inpiration is back, have lots of ideas too but i feel reason is limiting me to what i did before, so im abit stuck until i learn new sequencer better. in the meantime i use reason as therapy when i get enough of trying new sequencers and i usualy end up with a track out of it.

not sure this is a good answer but i think i produce beacuse i have alot of creativity that MUST go out, its good for me as in therapy, and I want people to hear what i make and eventualy my goal is to be a liveact playing once or twice a month and still be able to keep my other job.

Those in addition to wanting to attain utilitarian uses for my products one day. It would be cool to listen to a track of mine while playing some less-than-famous video game. Just a dream, but that dream is not necessary for me to enjoy producing.

back in 1998 after hearing the judge play his friday/sat show on radio one, and wondering why this new sound (to me) i was hearing (trance ov course) just sounded bloody brill, i knew i wanted to find out more. i always wondered where they played it, then the judge came to play at time nightclub in derby and i think that was it.

theres listening to the tracks, then theres listening to teh tracks, and wanting to know who made whichs one and starting to recon the dj's/producers etc, what sounds came in when, who played what etc etc all rolled in2 one makes it an amazing hobby or past time ...ten ish years on and im about there i think, so i guess its more of a passion/hobby and if one day i do get a track out there/ hear a dj play my track...well ill cream my pants : )

i'd say i'm a mix of mostly expression and nerd. i really enjoy the process of playing with the sound and trying to make it interesting. i also have always tried to find ways to be artistic and this would just be another one. I would say make the club dance, but i'm not soley interested in making music for the club. i have an interest in several genres...so that's just one facet of it. i really don't care about trying to make a living do this. i'd rather make a living doing something else and just try to be the best producer i can be.
